For McCain, Self-Confidence on Ethics Poses Its Own Risk [McCain had an affair?]

Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, in his offices and aboard a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s clients, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship.

I agree. I’m no great fan of McCain but that story is beneath the dignity of the supermarket tabloids. So the NYT runs with an unsources story about 10-20 year old allegations with no substantiaion other than a rumor from a couple of former and admittedly digruntled people with no better than second hand knowledge. If McCain sues the NYT, I would not blame him.

As soon as McCain is on the cusp of the nomination, the media ambushed. Welcome to the GOP, John.

Having given it a little thought, this may end up like the 60 Minutes debacle. THe topic will be whether the NYT was pressured into running the story from partisan news organizations. Already, we have heard that TNR threatened the NYT with running a piece that hte NYT was sitting on this story to force their hand.

Why does anyone in their right mind run for public office?

The only people who will be upset over this are hard core conservatives. And the majority of hard core conservatives aren't supporting McCain anyway. In fact, this story may actually help McCain with moderates and blue dog democrats.

Personally, I think the Huckabee camp is behind this, specifically Rollins.

The media is hyping the integrity angle. You must have watched Kieth Doberman this evening....

McCain never has, he has used National Security as his main angle.

But you can bet that integrity with be the media word of the day tomorrow, and for the rest of the week.

Now I can see why they padded him with so many endorsements! Somebody knew this was coming. They wanted him to be the nominee and some how scandal-proof. Life doesn't work that way (Karl Rove's brain is on Fox now).

Once a cheater and a liar, always...

Look at the shamnesty mess, his global warming mania. I do not want McCain. Let Vicki have him.

But to call someone a hero just because they were captured is not only not honest, it is self-defeating.

Not for nothing, and I'm certainly not chomping at the bit to vote for McCain, but he wasn't "merely" a POW. When the North Vietnamese found out he was the son and grandson of admirals, they offered him his release, figuring it would be good PR for them. McCain told them to pound sand; code of honor said first in, first out. So he ended up staying in POW camp for a good many years after that.

That sort of selflessness could certainly be construed as heroism. Perhaps not the degree of heroism displayed by Admiral James Bond Stockdale (RIP), but still, there you go.

I have said nothing about McCain's military service. While I have heard of charges by Vietnam Veterans Against McCain, I have no way to evaluate the allegations. You must have confused me with another poster.

McCain's adultery, Keating 5, his outrageous lies, his amnesty are all general knowledge. And he is creepy. He talks to himself. He is nasty. That also have been revealed on TV.

Character does matter. And there are studies that support it.

No, I think you are stupid. You mention "special favors" and then add "except for the Keating Five".

That was specifically what he was exonerated of. That innuendo is blatantly dishonest.

No other pilot crashed three aircraft, one of which caused a huge fire on his aircraft carrier killing dozens of his own men and then called a hero.

Now wait a sec here. Read my posts. I'm no friend of McCain, and I don't give him any free passes for his military service either. But the only involvement McCain had with the fire on the Forrestal was being in an aircraft sitting on deck that was struck by the misfired missile that started the conflagration. There's plenty of real stuff to hit McCain on without making sh*t up.

I’m not ashamed to support Rollins. He’s a good guy. Why should I hate him? Because he supporters Huckabee?
