Officials: F-15s collide over Gulf of Mexico

Story Highlights

(CNN) -- A pair of F-15C fighter jets are missing after colliding Wednesday during a training exercise over the Gulf of Mexico, according to Air Force officials. Two F-15 fighter jets, like the one pictured, collided over the Gulf of Mexico, the Air Force says.

Air Force search and rescue and U.S. Coast Guard crews were searching the Gulf for the pilots Wednesday afternoon. The planes were part of the 33rd Fighter Wing, a combat unit based at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida panhandle.

The crash happened at about 3 p.m. ET and about 50 miles south of Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. Excerpted

If both are missing, it sounds like a mid-air.

Prayers up...God's blessings on the aviators and their families.

Jesus why are we still flying in those things? Can’t we outfit our boys with something better than a thirty year old jets?

Jesus why are we still flying in those things?

Because they're all we have.

Can’t we outfit our boys with something better than a thirty year old jets?

Yes ... we can. It's called the F-22. 20 years of Bush-Clinton-Bush presidencies, and Democrat-Republican-Democrat controlled congresses have not been kind to the development of major new systems.

GW Bush has been somewhat of an improvement over GHW Bush and Bill the Impeached ... but there has also been a war going on. Machines wear out, when you use them a lot ... At some point they start breaking down on a regular basis ... it's best to replace them before it gets that bad. Folks in Washington don't seem to see it that way.

I refueled them in 1976 with an airplane that is over 50 years old now and still flying.

Jesus why are we still flying in those things?

Because it's the greatest air superiority aircraft ever know by humankind to date and with the record to prove it perhaps?

I was a teen at Bitburg AFB when they arrived. They are a pretty, pretty plane.

I saw the breaking news headline on my local newspaper website (NW Florida Daily News) and it said that two F-15’s collided over the gulf. The headline has since been removed and the local TV news is saying that they went “missing” around 2:00 local time just south of Panama City FL.

Yesterday, hubby was practically drooling over the 4 brand new F-22’s that landed at McChord. He rarely comes home from work beaming like that. He had more fun servicing those aircraft than he’s had in a while. =)

Mmm, I see your point, but remember the vastly different stresses they undergo in training. Would wear you down right quick..............

No we can’t. The Navy and Air Force are cutting fifty thousand people each so they can pay for systems.
The war in Iraq has eaten up a lot of money that in a non-war period could go to upgrading systems.
How old do you think the B-52s are?
