OF course this all assumes that we think the (R) alternative is better.

In case there is some question about that, consider this:

While McCain is far from my first choice, he appears to be the inevitable GOP nominee. As for the "lesser of two evils" I think there are substantial differences between McCain and the democrat nominee that would cause any true conservative to vote for McCain. Here are some examples of those differences:

Issue McCain hillary Obama
Iraq
  • Supports troop surge
  • Troops stay until Iraq's government is stable and secure
  • Begin troop withdrawal
  • Vows to end war, withdraw troops over 16 months
Economy
  • End congressional earmarks and control government spending.
  • Free market healthcare and energy policies will spur economic growth
  • Moratorium on some home foreclosures
  • Increase minimum wage and spending on infrastructure and job training.
  • Pro-union
  • "Re-negotiate" NAFTA
  • Increase regulation of Wall Street and lenders
  • Create fund to prevent homeowner foreclosures
Healthcare
  • Opposes mandates
  • $2500 refundable tax credit ($5000 for families) to help with health insurance
  • Expand healthcare savings accounts
  • Universal healthcare (cost 100B to 110B per year)
  • Health insurance subsidies to make health insurance affordable for virtually all Americans (50B to 65B per year)
  • Mandate coverage for children
Taxes
  • Extend Bush Tax Cuts (make permanent)
  • Simplify tax code
  • Reform AMT

  • Allow Bush tax cuts to expire for those earning $250K+
  • Freeze estate tax at 2009 levels to pay for universal 401(k) -- oh boy, another "universal" benefit
  • Reform AMT
  • Replace Bush tax cuts with new breaks of $500 to $1500 for individuals making less than $50K.
  • Raise capital gain and dividend tax rates
  • Eliminate "loophole" for hedge funds.
  • Reform AMT

Further, in the area of federal judges, we don't know for sure that McCain will give us Alito and Roberts, but we absolutely know for sure that hillary or Obama will give us more Bader Ginsburgs and Breyers.

Good list.

Let me add one more.

McCain is OLD. There is a good chance that he will not run for a second term.
