After “summit” meetings come “commissions”. While summits have photo ops and press releases, there is little else. Summits allow the pol to join the discussion for a few minutes, also when the press is allowed in. After a few sound bites are uttered, the pol always excuses themselves to attend to “other urgent business”, never to return. Summits last a day or two.

Commissions, on the other hand meet several times, sometimes for several hours at a sitting. Someone is tasked with collecting the position papers to be included in the commission’s report to the pol who formed it. On the last day of the last meeting, the commission “delivers” its report to the pol in front of the cameras who delivers the sound bites, pounds the podium and thanks the commission members who were left. After the pol promises to “implement” the “recommendations” of the commission, the report then takes its place on the shelf along with all the other commission reports with outstanding promises.
