CLINTON WANTS A GUN SUMMIT
NY Daily News ^ | February 18, 2008 | Michael McAuliff

Another new wrinkle from Hillary Clinton today: she wants a presidential summit on gun control.

That came up in the Q-and-A session of her stop in De Pere, after a woman asked about dealing with shootings such as the Northern Illinois University carnage.

Clinton started with the line she rolled out a couple days ago about recognizing that there is “no conflict” between letting lawful gunowners have weapons and keeping guns out of the hands of bad guys and the mentally ill.

She went on to propose a solution to coming up with a solution for the problem — kind of like her plan to come up with a plan for fixing another politically difficult problem, Social Security.

“I believe we really should have a summit where everybody comes together on all sides of this issue,” Clinton said. “Let’s figure out how we can be consistent with the Second Amendment, which I wholeheartedly support, and do more to keep people safe.

“I think we can do that, but it’s going to require us all to maybe give a little and understand the point of view of the other people,” she said. “That’s something I would do as President to really bring people together.”

“We know we need better background checks and we know we’ve got to have mental health information in there,” she said.

OK, that's two things you want, what two gun controls are you prepared to give up in exchange?

Or, is "it’s going to require us all to maybe give a little" really a one way street for more gun control and no relaxation of any restrictions?

Sadly, we know already know the answers to those questions.

“I think we can do that, but it’s going to require us all to maybe give a little and understand the point of view of the other people,”

Since 1934 the giving has been entirely done by the law-abiding citizen who has had their rights continually infringed. The only thing this citizen wants to see out of a "gun summit" is the restoration of the law to the spirit and intent of the Bill of Rights.

I guess if you have a gun you’re really warped.

So typical of the elites: get the power people in a room to decide things. Sad part is that a lot of average schmoes think that's the way it works.

Open discussion about whether it is better to enact a sweeping, draconian (and ineffective) gun ban by the stroke of a pen for the public good, or rather to simply register, license and heavily tax them as they are demonized as the twisted fetishes of psycho killers. You guys get together and decide what we should do; either way, Hillary will back you. Maybe we should just let the UN decide as we repair our standing in world opinion.

And don't worry about anything you say being made public. All the records go in the shredder as soon as anyone asks to see them.

The fires were started by Davidians, the gunshot victims were either overt suicides or assisted suicides- what a bunch of crap.

you may be able to make an argument that the BD were ultimately responsible but I don't think the facts support your statement

As for guns, Huckabee would be better.

Yes, he would. But, he won't be the nominee. That will leave McCain, mediocre with a mixed record on RKBA, against Hillary or Obama, who 'support' the second amendment, subject to 'reasonable restrictions' - and in their minds DC's total ban is a 'reasonable restriction'. Ain't life grand.

the Second Amendment, which I wholeheartedly support

She just doesn't support the "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" part.
