Egland would support McClintock for Congress

Eric Egland, the only Republican running for the 4th District congressional seat who lives in the district full time, says he would bow out if a Southern California state senator were to enter the race.
"I enthusiastically encourage Sen. (Tom) McClintock to enter the race. He is a true conservative who we can trust to represent us in Congress," Egland said through his campaign. "With Sen. McClintock, I see no need to continue my campaign. ... Should he enter the race, I will immediately withdraw and begin helping him raise the funds necessary to bring his message to the voters of the 4th Congressional District."
Egland, a security expert and major in the United States Air Force Reserves, is supporting security for President George W. Bush's trip to Africa, and was not immediately available for further comment.
McClintock adviser John Feliz told The Associated Press today that the well-known state politician is strongly considering a run for the seat being left by Rep. John Doolittle, and an announcement likely would come by the end of the week.
A crowded GOP primary already was emerging in the Republican-friendly 4th District. Northern California heavyweights Thomas "Rico" Oller and Doug Ose, both with long histories representing the area, have been seen as the front-runners. Theodore Terbolizard, a musician and web designer who lives part-time in Cedar Ridge, has cast himself as an old-fashioned Republican favoring smaller government.
Doolittle, who is under investigation in a federal lobbying scandal, has announced his retirement.
