All but six states have complied with federal requirements to seek an extension of the deadline they face for implementing more secure driver licenses for U.S. citizens or legal residents only under the REAL ID Act.
The list of state governments falling into line in the past couple of weeks includes former hold-outs like New Jersey and Washington, according to documents posted on the Web Friday by the Department of Homeland Security.
New Jersey filed for an extension after Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff personally called Gov. Jon Corzine, according to one account.
Of the six states that have so far not filed, only Delaware was expected to ask for an extension by the May deadline, according to Brian Zimmer, president of the non-profit lobby group Coalition for a Secure Driver's License.
Zimmer said the governors of Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma and South Carolina "appear to have turned their face against implementing the law" -- setting their citizens up for additional document requirements at airports and federal buildings.
REAL ID sets tough document security and information-sharing standards for state licensing authorities and bans the issuance of licenses except to those who can prove they are U.S. citizens or are in the country legally. States are not required to comply, but licenses that do not meet the act's standards will not be valid for federal purposes, including boarding airplanes and entering federal courts and other buildings.
The act comes into force in May and will apply to states that have not filed for an extension, giving them until December 2009 to meet its standards. Air travelers and visitors to federal buildings trying to use licenses from hold-out states as identification after the deadline will be turned away, said Homeland Security spokeswoman Laura Keehner.

I doubt the security will last long. It never does.
Internal passports...that seems to ring a bell. Now, where have I heard of that before...?
I wish these states would comply so this dum bass Chertoff could move on to other important matters like approving another 70,000 Saudi national’s education visas.
Man, have my thoughts on this guy done a 180.
In Virgina, Pennsylvania, Maryland and North Carolina DOT employees have been caught selling CDL's and in Florida a Sargent was selling military separation papers for drivers training. Do you not think they also would sell regular drivers license where they aren't as closely watched. So how secure do you think??? And I'm sure I have missed a few cases.
666 is all this National/REAL ID crap reminds me of.
I do not have a link, but someone here posted a link that all the secure(?) information was to be shared with Mexico and Canada. I complained to my rep, but I see this secure(?) ID is a done deal.
It reminds me of things along the same lines. In the Bible it is foretold that in the last days we will not be able to buy or sell without some sort of identifier around our forehead or our hands.
Retinal scans, palm prints, hand shape identifiers, who knows. I just don’t like the idea of the federal government demanding we all be known when it obviously wouldn’t even matter if we’re Wahabbiists or not.
This is all just a smoke screen for something the government wants, and knows the populace will roll over for, even if it is bogus on the face of it.
There you go. Heh heh heh...
And if DLs were left totally insecure, some FReepers would be carping about illegal aliens getting DLs.
Internation vacation?
I'm afraid to leave the state of Montana, and even Motana is starting to make me nervous.
Not secure at all.
This is just another example of Fedgov putting into place methods to make sure that thier property (us) is properly tagged so we can be more easily controlled prior to fleecing and later slaughter.
As long as we have thousands of unsecured miles of border with a 3rd world kleptocracy, I don't by none of the "security" crap they are peddling. That includes this and warrantless wiretaps as well.
People are selling their birthright of liberty for the temporary illusion of "security".
Sheeple make me sick.
No thanks. Borders are wide open and we are still totally dependent on foreign energy, so I’m unconvinced security is important to our government.
