'The Day She Died, She Knew She Couldn't Talk To Police,' Mom Says
DELAND, Fla. -- A Central Florida woman whose 17-year-old daughter was killed in a murder-suicide apparently committed by her ex-boyfriend said the teen was told by police to stop calling for help or she'd be arrested.
Police said Clay Coffner shot his estranged girlfriend, Natasha Hall, in the head outside her DeLand home Friday before turning the gun on himself.
Hall's mother, Sherry, said her daughter was concerned about Coffner and informed police.
In fact, Hall said her daughter called police so much that on Jan. 15 they threatened her.
"The police officer said if you call us one more time on him, I'm going to arrest you both," Sherry Hall said. "So, the day she died, she knew she couldn't talk to police. So, she handled it herself."
Michele Karpowicz said everyone noticed the warning signs before the homicide -- except police.
"I was going crazy," Hall's best friend said. "He was psycho, jealous and abusive."
Local 6 is trying to obtain a police call log to determine how many times the teen called police.
DeLand police officials have not responded to the allegations.
Often the police say they can’t do anything unless the person in question actually does something (other than make threats). Not all states have stalker laws.
There was a case of a woman whose ex was getting out of prison and she basically begged the cops to do something since he had threatened to kill her. The cops said they couldn’t do anything (she may have been unable to get a restraining order either) and the guy got out, went to her house and killed her. I recall the case brought up the whole issue of what should happen when someone is a known threat.
I think the first step is for the potential victim to be somewhere else.
Some years back when Miami was a really tough place, a friend explained that in Miami you didn't lock your car door or the thieves would have to break the window to steal your radio - and you'd have two problems to deal with... Your comment reminds me of that - your analysis is right - it's the world that's crazy.
Just another two digit IQ cop, the country seems to be over run with them.
I would not bet on that! they get off on their little uniforms and jackboots and have been known to shoot through door.
And what incompetent bunch enforces restraining orders.
Restraining orders are useless. What she needed was a gun to protect herself.
I have a large (and scattered all over the U.S.) family on my Mother’s side, and in the 1970s met a first cousin for the first time at my grandma’s house. We hit it off, she was a smart, sweet young woman. We sat on Grandma’s porch swing and talked for hours.
She had married a big drug dealer, very violent man in Ohio. She told me that he had shot at her, beat her to a pulp, and that someday he’d kill her.
Being the redneck girl I am, I asked her why she didn’t change her identity and take her nine year old daughter and flee the country, go where he couldn’t find her.
She replied, “He’ll find me, no matter where I go, and he will kill me someday.”
So, I said “Then I’d kill him first (and I meant it). If I thought somebody was determined to kill me, I’d kill them first, especially if I had a child to think of.
She didn’t leave him, and a few weeks after I met her, he was beating her, and her nine year old daughter called the police. He had told my cousin he would kill her if she ever called the police on him.
After the daughter called 9/11, then hung up the phone, the 9/11 operator (or police) called the house back, to make sure it wasn’t a prank.
He answered the phone. When he hung up the phone he blew my cousin’s head off in front of the nine year old daughter, then put the kid in the car and drove her to his brother’s house. He sat in the yard and blew his head off.
I say my cousin should have killed that ***** long ago and worried about the consequences later. I would have.
Not where I’m from. They get one whiff of a order being “broken” and the man is hauled off to jail.
Cops get paid by the hour, it is not their decision to get tired.
If I call the cops, it will be to come and clean up the mess!
Not to “save me”.
That is the way it should be, but many time you read about them having a restraining order after they are dead.
Living, breathing violations of the Third Amendment.
Kinder, gentler "quartering" that King George III wishes he'd thought of.
Hey! I've got it! Don't put 'em IN the houses - make the houses government property (property taxes) and use the "rent" to pay great government salaries, health benefits and pensions! Yeah, that's it! That's the ticket!
LOL
We have had to call the cops a couple of times (asshats in the yard, crackhead on the porch) The wife always ends the inital statement with “My husband has a loaded gun pointed at the (...) - please hurry.”
Seems to work for me.
See? It is possible to reason with some of the most unreasonable people.
“Cops get paid by the hour, it is not their decision to get tired.”
It is to the point where they can say next time you call you either file a formal complaint, or we’ll arrest you for making a false police call.
Try tying up the police lines with multiple bogus calls and you might have a different opinion about what isn’t “their decision” when you end up in the county jail.
Okay, good to know they’re still out there, even if I don’t know any (I’m from a VERY blue state).
"...he will kill me someday.
Nicole Brown Simpson had said the same thing.
What ever happened to the nine year old?
“The police were obviously too busy busting into wrong houses and killing dogs in their never ending quest for weed.”
too busy dumping disabled men out of their wheelchairs so they could more easily frisk them.
WHAT A HORROR.
I hate such suits . . . but in this case, I hope the mom becomes wealthy at public expense.
However, I think increasingly . . . the police are going to:
1. Be of no use to law abiding citizens . . . the puppet masters are going to be tasking them too much with
2. becoming the new gestapo . . . giving them the mentality and ruthlessnes . . . and corruption . . . to shoot on sight anyone they think deserves it.
Maybe for the same reasonHomocidal maniacs ignore Gun Free Zones signs.
Both are just worthless pieces of paper and neither will stop the criminalss.
Thanks for pointing that out.. it was driving me crazy.
So the dead girl is bogus! Ok, guess you are a cop!
