CARACAS, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Venezuela may create a windfall oil tax on earnings generated by quick increases in oil prices, President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday, extending the OPEC's nation's efforts to increase revenues from the oil industry.
The leftist Chavez has led a drive to boost taxes on oil companies and increase state control over the industry, a crusade that has led to an escalating legal battle between Venezuela and Exxon Mobil over nationalized assets.
"Soon I want to be presented with a recommendation for what we could call the tax on sudden earnings," Chavez said during his weekly Sunday broadcast.
The tax, which Chavez said originally came from Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz, would be the fourth move in as many years to increase government income from the OPEC nation's oil operations.
Say, doesn’t the government of Venezuela own all the oil anyway? Who exactly are they going to tax?
If themselves, I have no objection.

Venezuela created OPEC on the model of the Texas Railroad Commission and can do whatever they want with their oil, however ill-advised.

Hugo Chavez is a Mussolini without the means to conquer Latin America. The Brazilians would throw him out on his ass. He could try to conquer Guyana, but the British would make him unhappy. The worse he can do is to support the Columbian insurgency.

That's a great idea.
The liberals all hate the big drug companies when they must charge a steep markup on the actual cost of drugs to recoup their massive research and liability costs.
It should be the same for Hollywood and the recording industry. A DVD or CD that costs only pennies is being sold for up to $30 and more.
We need government action to set the maximum price of Hollywood movies and music to $1 where it should be!

Someone need to publicly ask BOR if he will agree to pay the same taxation rates as the oil companies.
