I will withhold judgement until I am able to view the documentary. One reason is because Mike Moyar was the principle consultant on this.

Mike Moyar wrote Triumph Forsaken: The Vietnam War 1954-1965.
This book is absolutely hated by liberal academia due to challenging many of the falsehoods about the war that exist today.

So, I will give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

“I believe the Army took people from any MOS in the early sixties for Helo training”

I did two tours in Nam. 1966-1967 average age of a pilot-warrant officer was 30+.

Second tour 1968-1969 average age of a pilot-warrant officer was 22. As a crew chief in 1969 I was older than most of the pilots.

BTW in the Army you never, ever say Helo, it’s like Hooah it is an Army thing. We called them Choppers, Birds, Ships, and Helicopters but never Helo’s.

FReeper txradioguy, of The Old Guard, was the announcer when Major Bruce P Crandall was inducted into The Pentagon Hall of Heroes the following day. Major Crandall signed his script.

You’re correct and I shouldn’t have referred to it like that. The program I mentioned was in 60-61 and was a pilot-warrant officer program that I considered but didn’t want to reenlist for the six years. There weren’t many choppers around when I was in.

Read the MOH Citation of Major Crandall..Then recelled—Ia Drang was the first big battle of the Vietnam War and was one of the bloodiest, fought for days...He truly deserved the MOH !...Guys were shot even before they got off the choppers...

Our forward HHC Tank battalion-69th Armored- was stationed on the road just above Ia Drang and it was a very spooky place..we were close to Plei Mei..that was in 66-67..

When I was at Armor Officer Basic in July-Sept ‘68, we had a full Colonel give us a talk on going into helicopters.

Armor Officer basic was at Ft. Knox, Ky. The Col. who spoke to us appeared to be very young for the rank.
