Leading Pro-Life Congressman Chris Smith Says John McCain Opposes Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- New Jersey congressman Chris Smith has led the pro-life charge in Congress for decades on abortion and bioethics issues. In a Monday interview, Representative Smith said likely Republican presidential nominee John McCain is pro-life on abortion and believes in protecting unborn children.
"He is pro-life in his heart of hearts, in my opinion," Smith told the Washington Times.
He said McCain's position on opposing abortion dates back decades and that his voting record on abortion matches his speeches on the campaign trail.
Smith also told the newspaper that there is little reason not to side with McCain when compared with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton -- two Democrats with decidedly pro-abortion views.
"The extreme positions taken by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been almost completely obscured, as it often is, by the focus on the Republican candidate," Smith said. "Some people like to be known as the education president. They will be known as the abortion president."
The praise for McCain's pro-life view on abortion also comes from those Arizona elected officials who know him best.
Jan Brewer, Arizona's secretary of state, and former Congressman Matt Salmon both are pro-life and both say McCain's record opposing abortion is crystal clear.
"I have been on the campaign trail, I have been at meetings with him, I have been at organization and party gatherings, the issue with him is very clear that he's pro-life," Brewer told the Times.
Salmon added that McCain endorsed him in a Congressional primary in part because of his pro-life views.
John Jakubczyk, president of the hometown Arizona Right to Life, told the Times McCain can be trusted to oppose abortion.
"From my perspective, I see him as someone we can enthusiastically support, and I look forward to his getting elected," he said.

“He is pro-life in his heart of hearts, in my opinion,” said Rep. Christopher H. Smith, New Jersey Republican and a pro-life movement leader, who said Mr. McCain’s commitment stretches back across decades of votes in the House and Senate.
“When you contrast him with the alternative and you think about such things as Supreme Court appointments, McCain is a far better choice,” said Barbara L. Lyons, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life, an organization that took Mr. McCain all the way to the Supreme Court over his campaign-finance laws, and won.
“From my perspective, I see him as someone we can enthusiastically support, and I look forward to his getting elected,” Mr. Jakubczyk (president of Arizona Right to Life) said, adding they have endorsed Mr. McCain every time he has run in Arizona.
“I have been on the campaign trail, I have been at meetings with him, I have been at organization and party gatherings, the issue with him is very clear that he’s pro-life,” (Jan Brewer, Arizona Secretary of State) said.
For Matt Salmon, a strong pro-life advocate and former congressman from Arizona, there’s no doubt where Mr. McCain comes down.
“I have been with John McCain through thick and thin. This is a man I truly believe in, and I could not be as supportive as I am if I thought there was any ounce of equivocation,” he said.
Mr. Salmon said that was solidified during his 1994 campaign for Congress when he was the only pro-life candidate in a crowded field of Republicans. “He endorsed me in that primary, and he told me the reason he did was because of my pro-life stance,” Mr. Salmon said.

Moreover, the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) funded TV ads in New Hampshire attacking Bush for nearly a year before the New Hampshire primary, but never a single ad criticizing McCain.
Why exactly do you think that is?
Probably because they had limited funds and they knew Bush would take out McCain.
Why do you think that NARAL gives McCain a ZERO to FOUR percent voting record?
A revealing observation was made on February 8 by Steven Brill, editor of the magazine Brill’s Content, which covers the news media.
Speaking on the Fox News Channel program “The Edge”, Brill said two reporters covering the McCain campaign told him, “You know, he really doesn’t feel that strongly about abortion and about — he isn’t really as pro-gun as he lets on in the campaign. He has to do that because it’s a Republican primary, but he’s kind of let us know that he’s not that hard-edged on those subjects.”
Brill went on, “The point I’m making is that he was given permission, at least by these two guys [journalists], to pander. One of them actually said, ‘At least when McCain panders he sort of lets us know he’s doing it, and he kind of winks and kind of enjoys it, so he’s a good guy.’ Well, he’s not letting the rest of the country know he’s pandering.”
In the same vein, liberal Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote on December 15, “McCain’s people whisper, Don’t worry. He’s not really so anti-abortion.”
I agree. I am going to support McCain and do my best to keep that baby murdering POS Obama out.
Believe me, if my bus goes over the cliff, we all go over the cliff. You, me and every other US citizen.
So better you have some input to the driver than to be so far back that he can no longer hear you.

But it’s your guy who’s behind the wheel. Excuse me if I don’t go along for the ride, except to the extent I’m forced to because leftists have managed to gain control of the formerly conservative party.
But, I won’t be a party to the destruction, in any case. That’s on your shoulders.
Those who opposed the slide into evil cannot rightfully be blamed for that destruction by the very people who surrendered to it and helped bring it about.

I can SAY all day that someone supported something.
My saying it doesn’t make it so.
McCain will never be your ideal candidate. But then neither will Hillary or Barrack. As someone pointed out, even if God is elected on the write in ballot, He likely would decline. So, you're basically stuck with McCain, Obama or Hillary.
You're likely to get more of your agenda done with McCain. You'll get absolutely nowhere with the other two.
And if you choose to not support McCain and it can be statistically proven, then you've been exposed as a lot of fluster and bluster but no power.
You're looking for the the ideal utopian social Christian outcome. It ain't gonna happen this year. So you'll have to use your God given gray matter to discern a choice among the choices available.
Alan Keyes is his candidate. Keyes is very conservative and a good man with zero chance of ever becoming president.
I can’t speak for Donna, but my personal strategy (unlike McCain’s) is to not have or countenance abortions.
