System Worries Clinton Backers Delegates Won May Not Reflect Popular Vote

By Matthew Mosk Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, February 18, 2008; A06

Supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton are worried that convoluted delegate rules in Texas could water down the impact of strong support for her among Hispanic voters there, creating a new obstacle for her in the must-win presidential primary contest.

Several top Clinton strategists and fundraisers became alarmed after learning of the state's unusual provisions during a closed-door strategy meeting this month, according to one person who attended.

What Clinton aides discovered is that in certain targeted districts, such as Democratic state Sen. Juan Hinojosa's heavily Hispanic Senate district in the Rio Grande Valley, Clinton could win an overwhelming majority of votes but gain only a small edge in delegates. At the same time, a win in the more urban districts in Dallas and Houston -- where Sen. Barack Obama expects to receive significant support -- could yield three or four times as many delegates.

"What it means is, she could win the popular vote and still lose the race for delegates," Hinojosa said yesterday. "This system does not necessarily represent the opinions of the population, and that is a serious problem."

Why is the Clinton campaign only now discovering the makeup of the Texas primary/caucus system when they've had over a year to prepare a workable strategy?

This is a candidate ready on day one? Hillary Marxist Clinton was and never will be ready to be President.

If you can’t win under the present rules (theirs), then change the rules. Gore-Lieberman 2000............

Yes, only now do they worry. They thought that Hillary! would have dispatched all her political enemies’ campaigns long before now. A serious miscalculation. They thought it would have been a cake walk to Denver. Obama threw a monkey wrench into their plans. Now, they are really having to actually work and plan in realistic terms, just in order to stay even. The “system” was okay as long as it favored her, but now it’s unfair.............

Also complicating the Clinton crime family’s Texas strategy is that GOP voters can vote for the Dem. candidates. I imagine many GOP voters will vote for Obama, just to stop the Hildabeast.

I for one am sick to death of hearing Obama whine about how his mother died at age 53!

My guess is she went willingly just to escape the sound of his voice.

The Clinton campaign had better worry about winning rather than spinning. If she loses Texas she’s toast.

Just a guess:

a) They figured Her Heinous would be ‘way out in front after Super Duper Tuesday, and

b) She figured the (R) race would still be hot, therefore (R) => (D) primary crossover vote would be insignificant.

Neither one turned out to be true.

BTW, I am planning to be part of that crossover vote. ;-)

It is a “Republican” system, WTA by district. It is too much like a Republic to make sense to them. The only thing different is the use of state Senate districts instead of Congressional districts.
