Northern Illinois University Shooting Revives Horrible Idea: Guns on Campus
North Star Writers Group ^ | February 18, 2008 | Lucia Bill

On the morning following the shootings at Virginia Tech last April, several Korean students missed class here at Arizona State University. We were up together until early morning going over statistical regression, so there had to be another reason that they were missing out on finals review. It turned out that they were afraid to come to class fearing retaliation from students stricken with grief and anger. While we assured our friends there was absolutely nothing to worry about, today – with two university shootings and 12 states considering allowing concealed weapons on school campuses, that may no longer be the case.

Proponents of these measures in Arizona and states as diverse as Washington and Alabama are quick to point to incidents like the tragic events at Northern Illinois University that left six people, including the shooter, dead as proof that weapons on school grounds are necessary. Some, Arizona among them, are extending that right past the gates of institutions of higher learning and to all public schools – elementary, middle and high schools.

"Gun owners don?t like relying on others to protect them and feel the need to count on their own skill ? not the rationality and goodwill of their fellow man."

If these guys are so hot on relying on the goodwill of a fellow man, why won't they let the fellow man come to the fight armed with the tools he needs to get the job done (sometimes just with the mere knowledge that he might have them)?

Because carrying guns in NYC is highly illegal. That’s the most dangerous place I go.

On campus in PA, the worst you get is administrative action if you have a valid concealed and use the gun. A shooter on a rampage is pretty good cause for concealed use.

I’d rather get kicked out of here alive for taking a shot than have a wacko execute me.

Would the liberal like a little bit of cognitive dissonance to go with his elitism? They’re simply scrumptious together. Served with a dash of irony.

You should have stayed in PA where they still have something close to civilization.

A man from Mars lands in America. He wants to kill as many American’s with a gun as he can. He scopes out the whole country. He decides on schools. He buys his guns and off he went.

Before he could get started a reporter stopped him to ask, “So what brings you to America?” The Martian responses, “Well, I was teased as a child and after I stopped taking my medication back on Mars I wanted some revenge.”

“Why take it out on American’s?” the reporter pushed back. “Because on Mars, everybody owns a gun.” Not quite sure what to say, the reporter asks in a matter of fact way, “Doesn’t everybody here in America own guns?” With a Martian chuckle, and his hand on the reporters shoulder, he answered, “Not everybody.”

As the Martian turned to walk away, the reporter shot back, “What do you mean?”

With a sinister grin, and his hands morosely caressing his brand new semi-automatic pistols tucked into his belt, the Martian quipped, “SCHOOLS! They’re gun free zones.”

A man from Mars landed in Israel last month....

The two terrorists who were killed Thursday evening after breaking into a yeshiva [school that teaches Torah, Mishnah and Talmud] in the settlement of Kfar Etzion were released from an Israeli prison last week, Palestinian sources in Hebron told Ynet.

According to the sources, the terrorists were identified as relatives Muhammad and Mahmoud Sbarana, both 20-year-old Hamas members from the village of Beit Omer, near Hebron.

The terrorists, armed with a gun and a knife and dressed in uniform, threatened the students and the instructors with the weapons before being shot to death by the yeshiva's instructors, two of whom were lightly injured while struggling with the terrorists.

Palestinian security officials told Ynet Friday morning that the two were imprisoned in Israel for the past two years for attempting to steal weapons from an IDF base in the Gush Etzion area.

Much better ending. The Israelis learned their lessons from the Lod Airport and the Ma'alot school massacres.

I replied with this:

“That was a terrible article. Yes, violence begets more violence. But the answer to violence, is to provide an answer more violent and rapid than the danger posed. That may be absolutely incredulous to you, but please think about it. Would you rather threaten a potential burglar, saying “I’m going to call the police!,” or “Leave or I’ll shoot you!”? The answer to shootings happening in malls or colleges is not for the unfortunate people in the vicinity to put their head between their legs and kiss their butts goodbye. The answer is for a few people carrying concealed to stand up, draw their weapons, and turn the criminal into Swiss cheese.

Remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.”
