Unused hospital razed in Nigeria

A fully-equipped hospital that lay unused for two years has burned to the ground in northern Nigeria. The General Hospital in Maiduguri was built in 2006 but the state government refused to open it until the president came to cut the ribbon.
Several surgical theatres, the intensive care ward, and the clinical section which held millions of dollars of equipment were all destroyed.
The president was due to visit the hospital next month to open it.
Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff blamed the fire on arsonists who wanted to damage his political reputation.
The governor had refused to open the hospital, which was ready for patients in June 2006, until former President Olusegun Obasanjo came to the state.
His visit was postponed several times, the last being just two months before the election in 2007.
His successor Umaru Yar'adua was due to visit later next month.
Measles outbreak
Borno was recently hit by a measles outbreak that killed hundreds of children across three states.
Existing hospitals in Borno are poorly equipped and overcrowded.
Angry residents of Bulunkutu, where the hospital was situated, gathered around the burned hospital and shouted abuse at the alleged arsonists, local papers reported.
The governor addressed the arsonists through the media.
"There is not one hospital in the country owned by a state government that has the type of world class equipment we had in there. It is their people that would have benefitted," he told reporters at the scene.
GMTA. This is no problem. President Bush will simply build them another one.
10 to 1 all that “world class” equipment had been sold already...
Whow! who knew, Nigerian Lightning.
Dear Mr. T3t 68,
Recently my Uncle who was on the hospital board here in Maiduguri came into possession of a lot of “world class”
hospital equipment, all brand new, which I am helping him
to dispose of, this equipment is worth millions but my poor Uncle only wishes to recover his storage costs, please send me your etc. etc. etc.
Suncerely.
Patrice Lamumba.
Nigerian doctors have long since fled for their lives from the medieval muslim barbarian Northern areas.
No doctors = empty hospitals.
Well they sure taught the president a lesson.
Obama wants to send more of our money!
Where are all the African Americans who have a such a strong conviction to their heritage?
Why are they letting their homeland decay into disaster?
Osbama is your man. He want to send billions more to Nigeria via the UN. Not that they need money. They’ve got lots of oil revenue, but somehow it goes.
Nature should be allowed to run its course in places like this.
africawinsagain...
It is, it is....
tet68 nailed this one, incidentally.
Maybe Bush and the Dems are responding to the Nigerian email scams!!!!!!!
Sounds like an UN operation.
I agree. However, like it or not, and I don’t like it, Nigeria is a source of oil. Cheaper to bribe the thugs than have the oil completely cut off.
LITFA. A new hospital or clinic or food bank or civil works project in Africa is an unwanted asset which will be deconstructed and used for activities completely contrary to the original good intention.
Okay. Give them some liquor and save some money.
Bush already gave Africa 5 billion last year. Obama is just following his buddy.
I doubt most knowledgeable African-Americans care much what happens to the slavers in the old country.
Do you?
