The President’s Advisory Panel for Federal Tax Reform cited the rebate as one of their chief concerns when analyzing their national sales tax, stating that it would be “the largest (entitlement program) in American history”, and contending that it would “make most American families dependent on monthly checks from the federal government”.

The Tax Reform Panel was bought and paid for by Tax Lobbies. The Chairmen of the Tax Reform Commission were former Senators Breaux and Mack. Look where they ended up:

Breaux:
Since 2005, Breaux has been a lobbyist for Washington, DC, firm Patton Boggs LLP:

Mack:
Mack joined King & Spalding:

Both of these and many of their staff have gone to work for tax lobbyists. The number of tax lobbyists that work inside the Beltway number far above 20,000. K-Street tax lobbying firms are revolving doors for government sector - private sector employment pipelines.

The Tax Reform Panel has since been discredited. It was a major failure resulting in no sensible tax reform:

Since the Tax Reform was disbanded in November 2005, the FairTax movement has grown from 46 to 70 cosponsors. The membership of Americans For Fair Taxation has more than doubled to well over a million members.

And how many recommendations have been adopted from the Tax Reform Panel Report? Zero.

I don't know about you, but I believe the trend is your friend. Betting on the Tax Reform Panel is like investing in Enron Part Deux. Betting on the FairTax is like investing in Google in 2004 at its offering price of $85. Today even after a huge market correction, GOOG stock is selling at $530.

Good luck with your dead tax panel.
