Almost all of them are "Khazars," a long-extinct Turkic tribe from somewhere north of the Caspian Sea."This is oddly reminiscent of the undergraduate who explained, in an Elizabethan Lit course, that Shakespeare's plays weren't written by Shakespeare at all, they were written by someone else named Shakespeare.
