Robert D. Novak: No McCain/Huckabee ticket
Union Leader ^

. . .

MCCAIN AND HUCKABEE

Insiders close to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign have put out the word that there is absolutely no chance that his last remaining major opponent for the Republican presidential nomination, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, will become McCain’s vice presidential running mate. McCain personally likes Huckabee, and McCain’s campaign has not wanted to antagonize Huckabee’s evangelical supporters, whose backing will be needed in the general election. But McCain’s close advisers reject a place on the ticket for Huckabee, who is unacceptable to economic conservatives.

The immediate problem that Huckabee poses for McCain strategists is how to get him out of the presidential race without offending him. While Huckabee cannot possibly get enough delegates to be nominated, he worries the McCain camp by threatening to win an occasional state, as he did recently in Kansas. Huckabee attempted to upset McCain in Virginia, though McCain wound up winning the primary there by a comfortable nine points.

Barbour would be a great choice.

I agree. I think Barbour would be an excellent choice. I think holding down the south is very important.

I don’t know if Romney is the right match to salvage McShame, but they need to think this through very carefully.

I think Huckabee wants to influence the Republican platform for the convention in September by staying in the race. There’s no doubt he’s aimimg for another presidential run in 2012 or 2016.

Romney had the most class bowing out at the big CPAC convention like a gentleman. And clearly stated that his campaign was not about personal ambition, but the country's future.

And a week later going on stage with McCain to endorse him and giving his delegates the OK to go with McCain. (even though McCain looked like he was severely constipated there, LOL!)

And days after that, Huckabee is still campaigning. And still running off about Romney, who is no longer an opponent!

Romney made Huckabee look like a cheap, selfish, greedy blowhard in grand style. And Huckabee's mad in public because it took him only 12 days to figure out what happened to him?

If McCain watches his mouth and does as he is told, it will be the first time.

He is unacceptable to just about everyone who is not an evangelical Christian. He is exactly what Republicans did not need, a party divider. Candidates should appeal to all the main groups of the party.

This is very good news. Thanks, Mitt Romney, for giving your delegates to McCain.

I hope Romney comes back next time. Look at the choices left now: McCain, Mrs. Clinton or Obama?! Romney can’t be McCain’s VP or anyone else’s. He’s too smart and will upstage the boss.

McCain may go with a Republican VP, but he would prefer Lieberman or Hillary, someone who shares his political beliefs.

“Romney had the most class bowing out at the big CPAC convention like a gentleman. And clearly stated that his campaign was not about personal ambition, but the country’s future. “

The guy registers republican to run a losing race in 1994, pulls off one term as a Massachusetts governor spending 6 million dollars of his own money to buy the seat, proclaims himself a conservative in 2005 at the start of his presidential run and then spends up to 50 million dollars of his own money in a losing attempt to remake himself, and you think that he isn’t a pure blob of personal ambition?

I just looked up personal ambition and it said, see Mitt Romney, he came out of no where, has nothing to do with conservatism or the republican party, but recently exploded on the scene with a fat wallet and a hunger for power.

Barbour would be a stupid choice IMHO. If a Republican is not guaranteed the south it’s all over. Haley would be a waste. My predictions are Gov Tim Pawlenty of MN or former congressman and US Trade Rep Rob Portman of OH.

at last, someone got the clue hiding in plain site>

I've suspicioned this was cooking ever since Romney 'suspended'

Then he has some dumb advisors.

He is shooting himself in the foot as far as the party goes. He won't get backing for another run.....The adults are circling the wagons against the common enemy and Huckster is still running back and forth yelling "What about ME? MeMeMeMeMe.........
