. . .
MCCAIN AND HUCKABEE
Insiders close to Sen. John McCains presidential campaign have put out the word that there is absolutely no chance that his last remaining major opponent for the Republican presidential nomination, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, will become McCains vice presidential running mate. McCain personally likes Huckabee, and McCains campaign has not wanted to antagonize Huckabees evangelical supporters, whose backing will be needed in the general election. But McCains close advisers reject a place on the ticket for Huckabee, who is unacceptable to economic conservatives.
The immediate problem that Huckabee poses for McCain strategists is how to get him out of the presidential race without offending him. While Huckabee cannot possibly get enough delegates to be nominated, he worries the McCain camp by threatening to win an occasional state, as he did recently in Kansas. Huckabee attempted to upset McCain in Virginia, though McCain wound up winning the primary there by a comfortable nine points.

Santorum and even I would consider voting for the POS.
Thanks for saying that.
Novak has been Captain Obvious for awhile now.
He needs to retire.
People here on FR are more informed than he is.
He is hard to watch on Fox—looks like he needs a fast acting laxative all the time.
“Could it be possible that Huckabee just needs a job?”
He will never be short of work, if you look at his bio you will see that his 14 years in government and the extraordinary success of this campaign only enhance his pre government resume.
Look for Pawlenty at number 2.
Santorum's point was that McCain would make a bad President. And just tolerable as a Senator. The members of that club help each other with their fingers crossed. Like with a-holes in any profession.
When you are unacceptable to McCain as a conservative that is really bad. As a Conservative, McCain is unacceptable to me. If Huckabee can stop him from getting the needed delegates, he will be a hero to me. If it is McCain, Obama or Hillary, it won’t matter. In 2102, we will have 10+ million new voters whichever it is. Given the current voting trends and the change in demographics, adios, Republicans.
Huckabee & Somebody
Are you serious? Economic conservatives don't want to abolish the IRS? Economic conservatives approve of McCain's opposition to the Bush tax cuts?
What a joke. I could think of a dozen other reasons not to want Huckabee. But economic conservatives?
No Huckabee is good news for people interested in the Republicans winning this election. I believe Charlie Crist is a logical VP choice. Crist would seal Florida for McCain, allowing him to focus his resources elsewhere, like Ohio and New Hampshire. I can’t think of any other VP candidate that would bring that much to the ticket.
I consider myself an economic conservative of the Adam Smith, Abraham Lincoln tradition -- and Mike Huckabee, too.
If by "economic conservative," Novak means Hamiltonian aristocrat, or revisionist Randite, he should define his terms much, much better.
Then there has to be more to him than I have glimpsed. Does he has in him a kind of Gene McCarthy type speech, for instance—Gene without the perversity but with the high intellligence?
Or, does he mean anti-American globalist?
Maybe all of the above.
I leave it to others more knowledgeable to guess who.
FR links on McCain's record from Feb. 2000. MrChips collection.
I tell you what. McCain had better be real smart about his vp pick. If Obama is the nominee, the south is going to have 100% turnout in certain demographics. On the republican side, McCain is an epic yawner. He could witness some really unprecedented losses if he is not extremely careful about his running mate. Were I him, I would worry more about about social conservatives than economic conservatives.
McCain is in deep trouble and he knows it. Im sure he has been told to watch his mouth and do as told. If I am Chair of the GOP, he would be getting slapped down good and taking some nasty medicine. Its the last chance to make him get in line.
If McCain gets the presidency, he will be living with the threat of mutiny, 24/7. He deserves no less.
Don’t knpw about Huckabee, but I agree about Lincoln. BTW, History has its ironies. His party kept doing him a favor by failing to give him or win him high office after 1848. They kept bumping him up to the highest executive office. Obama probably seems himself in that light.
How about either Sarah Palin, Mark Sanford, Mike Pence, or Janice Rogers Brown as McCain’s final V.P. choice?
