Bill would require California's science curriculum to cover climate change
San Jose Mercury News ^ | February 15, 2008 | Paul Rogers

Reading, writing and . . . global warming?

A Silicon Valley lawmaker is gaining momentum with a bill that would require "climate change" to be among the science topics that all California public school students are taught.

The measure, by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, also would mandate that future science textbooks approved for California public schools include climate change.

"You can't have a science curriculum that is relevant and current if it doesn't deal with the science behind climate change," Simitian said. "This is a phenomenon of global importance and our kids ought to understand the science behind that phenomenon."

The state Senate approved the bill, SB 908, Jan. 30 by a 26-13 vote. It heads now to the state Assembly. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken numerous actions to reduce global warming, but he has yet to weigh in on Simitian's bill. Other Republicans in the Capitol, however, are not happy about the proposal.

Some say the science on global warming isn't clear, while others worry the bill would inject environmental propaganda into classrooms.

"I find it disturbing that this mandate to teach this theory is not accompanied by a requirement that the discussion be science-based and include a critical analysis of all sides of the subject," said Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, during the Senate debate.

Only two Republicans voted for the bill, Sen. Abel Maldonado, R-San Luis Obispo, and Sen. Tom Harman, R-Costa Mesa. ... All 13 of the no votes were from Republicans.

One of the opponents, Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Modesto, said he wants guarantees that the views of global warming skeptics will be taught.

"Some wouldn't view them as skeptics. Some would view them as the right side of the issue," said Denham, ...

New information indicates that the sunspot cycle has all but disappeared and the longer the sun remains quiet the more likely we may enter a prolonged cooling period on the earth:

... it appears that the sun has slowed it’s internal dynamo to a similar level such as was seen during the Dalton Minimum. ... No wonder there is so much talk recently about global cooling, ... because a Dalton type solar minimum would be very bad for our world economy and agriculture.

Where have all the sunspots gone?

From Wikipedia:

The Dalton Minimum was a period of low solar activity, lasting from about 1790 to 1830. Like the Maunder Minimum and Sporer Minimum it coincided with a period of lower than average global temperatures. Low solar activity seems to be strongly correlated with global cooling.

But make sure and not demand that math or the nuts-and-bolts of science be taught.

That way when the average temperature starts going down, they will still be able to convince the chilluns that global warming is a danger!

Maldonado... there he is again being one of the sole turncoats, carrying Arnold's water.

And Ackerman thinks his reelection is a top priority of the CaGOP. Unbelievable.

There is so much we don’t understand about the sun and our climate, yet we pretend to know it all with our computer models to back it up. Then we are far too willing to blame a half a degree of warming on US citizens and teach shame and fear to our children. When the cycle undeniably shifts again as hit has many times before and the cooling is readily apparent, who will we then blame? What new tax will be required to appease the sun and make it warmer again? What value is science if we refuse to learn its secrets?

Thanks for you note to admin moderator. I was going to pick up your keywords, but you beat me to it. Smart minds think alike or something like that.

BTW, we are under a winter storm warning/heavy snow warning here in southern NM just above the Texas/Mexico/New Mexico border and El Paso is under a snow advisory. I never was a global warming believer, but I’m much more wary of possible global cooling. We’ll know for sure in a year or two.

They cannot teach Intelligent Creation as a theory but treat Al Gore Mysticism as a science.

I went to public school in California and I remember when our class read “Chicken Little” and we were taught the lesson about not following fear mongers who insist the world is coming to an end.

I bet that book isn’t part of the California school curriculum anymore.

Just teach political correctness to the kids.

Yep, let’s tie it in with the homosexual agenda.

I think Calif. was passing a requirement that homosexuality was to be discussed in sex ed. family life education programs, is that true?

It’s crazy how the science of sex education has been twisted about. Sex education and family life education was said to be teaching our children about the reproductive system, because when you get down to it, sex is how we reproduce. That should be an undisputed scientific fact. Science does not know why some people are homosexual. Yet homosexuality is discussed as if it’s part of the same process as reproduction. It just doesn’t make sense to include it.

And with global warming, we just don’t know enough about the whole situation. There have been numerous ice ages and periods of global warming and cooling in the past. We don’t know enough about how earth’s climate works. Scientists should be free to study without agendas pushing for conclusions favorable to certain points of view. Science is supposed to be free of politicial agendas, or should be.

You’re welcome! I searched before I posted but I guess I was too slow, LOL.

As to keywords, hope you didn’t mind. It comes in handy to look back at various pieces of legislation. Hopefully, this one will get stopped in the process (but I tend to doubt it).

I liked Denham’s comments about skeptics... but then he went on to talk about “a cleaner world.” ARGHHH!!!

If this passes, I recommend the following be added to the curriculum:

Apparently, science is based consensus these days … got’a love it.

Consensus works (feels) better … Kumbaya and all that. Majority rule eliminates any argument and other pesky things such as scientific studies, research and logic. ;-)

Elected representatives should have very little to do with details of curriculum and before they do they should take and pass the high school exit exam before they can speak on education issues. Also they should take the CBEST, pass and post their score publicly before they can vote on education bills.

Now, now. Let's be fair. Let's divulge Ackerman's reason; which has nothing to do with Maldonado's voting record or his governing philosophy.

Maldonado is the token Hispanic in the Republican Assembly caucus. To actively campaign against the lone Hispanic would cause irreparable harm to the CAGOP within the Hispanic voting demographic.

I think the curriculum should also cover the flat earth theory, the phlogiston theory, as well as teaching about all the elements: air, earth, fire, and water.
