Whoops. Can a mod fix my title please?
Nope, Sorry.
Not necessary to fix headline since we have full knowledge of the topic already.
eed ome elp ere.
My daughter worried that if we busted it up, a ton of little pieces would enter the atmosphere (pretty smart for a 12 year old, heck, the fact that she watches the news with us makes me proud) but I assured her that one big piece would only half burn up, leaving a still large piece. But a bunch of small pieces would burn up their mass on entry.
Can someone tell me I was correct?
Its a B.S. headline. It seems to be something that just happened. It should say “Satelliet Shootdown Plan To Display Missile Muscle.”
Drudge and others are getting bad at that. Must be some insider marketing program to lure lurkers to their sites (i.e. Drudgereport/Wash Times/NYTIMES) by misleading headlines. Its getting old quick.
Have we already shot it down or is this still getting ready to happen?
I believe the idea is to rupture the fuel tank and destroying the toxic fuel, the little pieces of metal left over with either burn up during reentry or be so small that they most likely cause no problem if they do survive the reentry. IMHO
Yes.
Tell you daughter that the problem ain’t what returns to earth, but the debris that stays in orbit. Its a threat to other satellites and spacecraft.
The earth is mostly empty and, with no planning at all, anything that made it to earth would have 60+ percent chance of landing in the water. Since they did plan it, its more like 100%.
No pressure here. If our missile fails, we can always ask the Chinese to shoot it down.
The event will be conducted after the present Shuttle mission is completed. At least another week to go.
The little bits actually have a better chance of making it through reentry intact, depending upon what they’re made of and what shape/size they come out of the explosion in. A pretty intuitive little girl you’ve got there. When she gets a little older, make sure she considers engineering or the sciences for a career choice.
When posting a news story on FR, titles have to be exactly as on the original story.
You are correct.
In addition, there is more of a likelihood we can influence the reentry point for the bulk of the junk by intentionally breaking it up, and make it even more likely that those smaller pieces will hit the 2/3s of Earth that is ocean.
The ton of pieces are going to get us somehow, after all.
They want it in a zillion pieces for security reasons. Don’t want our friends to get anything they can analyze.
