Gore Warns on 'Subprime Carbon' Industry Feb 14 09:20 PM US/Eastern By JOHN HEILPRIN Associated Press Writer UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Al Gore advised Wall Street leaders and institutional investors Thursday to ditch businesses too reliant on carbon-intensive energyor prepare for huge losses down the road.
"You need to really scrub your investment portfolios, because I guarantee youas my longtime good redneck friends in Tennessee say, I guarandamntee youthat if you really take a fine-tooth comb and go through your portfolios, many of you are going to find them chock-full of subprime carbon assets," the former vice president said.
Carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels is the leading component of "greenhouse gases," which scientists say are playing a key role in warming the globe.
Gore's remarks before a high-profile business crowd that collectively controls some $20 trillion in capital were intended to unleash a financial ripple effect that could force the world to start putting a price on carbon emissions.
Gore, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to warn about climate change, compared the financial risks facing investors in carbon-using industries with the meltdown in the market for subprime mortgages given to people with blemished credit records or low incomes.
"Similarly, the assumption that you can safely invest in assets that come from business models that assume carbon is free is an assumption that is about to go splat," he said. "You have lots of assets, many of you do, in your portfolios right now that truly do deserve that epithet 'subprime.'"

This is the man that owns a polluting zinc mine, correct?
He just cut his chances of stealing a brokered convention nomination by at least 50%.
Borrowing Toddster’s ping list...
I hope nothing in your portfolios includes subprime carbon!
I’ve been wondering where this nutbag has been for the past couple of months. Sheesh.
His observations and proclamations are beginning to border on Messianic.
When Algore talks, Wall Street listens......
NOT!!!!
I wish he would lose his voice.
Not that Jesse isn’t clever. But Gore does have that condescending white attitude that liberals find so endearing.
Why don’ they see through him? Why do they allow him to go on and on! What power does he hold over them? This is driving me mad!!! Why can’t something be done!?
But, to your point:
Gore has pet rocks for sale that will protect you from global warming. He SAID they work, and who are we to question him? Invest NOW!
Beat me to it.
Subprime is the new scare word. I guess it replaces Katrina, which replaced Enron.
Border? He done jumped the border. Problem is Obama, Hillary and McCain aren't far behind on the GW frontier.
Some of Algore's longtime good redneck friends in Tennessee use the n-word, but his longtime good liberal friends in the MSM give him a free ride on that..........
538 doesn't, of itself sound, too scary. But when you say that Gore lost only because of the sanity of 1.79x10-4 % of the population, it gets downright frightening.
Al Gore may be the friend of the Earth, but he is the enemy of American capitalism. He thinks he has cleverly calculated the method to shake down the American free enterprise. The problem with it is American free enterprise has its own means of self preservation. Al Gore will be lucky to escape with his skin.
I wish he would go away. (From a Tennessean)
The ability to post that is pretty darn good. :^)
