Backed by studies showing that middle-class Seattle residents can no longer afford the city's middle-class homes, consensus is growing that prices are too darned high. But why are they so high?
An intriguing new analysis by a University of Washington economics professor argues that home prices have, perhaps inadvertently, been driven up $200,000 by good intentions.
Between 1989 and 2006, the median inflation-adjusted price of a Seattle

That should be a nice wide road these good intentions are paving.
Am I right?
Having just read it, you are correct.
Home prices in Seattle were driven up not so much by intentions as by Californians
.
“perhaps inadvertently,”
The highly paid, intelligent government employees who passed these laws are responsible for the effects of their laws, even if the effects are “unintended”.
In reality, the bad effects are quite easily foreseen and predictable, so the lawmakers are totally responsible for the bad effects.
This is what most liberal laws do - they hurt those who they profess to help.

And mean spirited too.
Also children. You don’t think about them, nor snail darters.
"green space" is so yesterday.
It's now refered to as "environmental mitigation". We must learn keep up with the "Progressive's" buzz word progression.
Obviously we need to mandate the construction of affordable housing tht by-passes all these regulations.
Inadvertently? Good intentions? Not likely. Good for___ ??? They were more likely driven up by well planned regulations to increase price which is good for real estate sales people and the tax man. Regulations may have even made some think that they were making the world a better place. The owners are the last to be given any consideration in a socialist society.
... but I thought they were all about sustainable development...
I had to give up last year in my persuit of buying a home in Seattle. Prices have officially squeezed me out and I refuse to buy a 800sq ft former apt thats had granite counter tops put in for 400K that they are now calling a condo.
I love how article after article in the Seattle press for years has been talking about how all these price gains were justified because everyone living in Seattle had amazing high paying jobs at Microsoft and could afford it. What a load. At least its now confirmed why. Regulation aka democrat good intentions aka pandering to anti-development environmentist moonbats.
This article is like a full all guns broadside into all the crap spewed by the liberal press up here about the justification for the price gains in real estate.

Say WA? Evergreen State ping
FReepmail sionnsar if you want on or off this ping list.

“”Home prices in Seattle were driven up not so much by intentions as by Californians””
Bingo... I live in Spokane on east side of the state and Californians have been THE major contributer to the rise in upscale home prices here. I was fortunate to buy low and sell 100k higher in less than three years here on my first home.
Not quite, it was the fear of the Californian.
Mmmm, snail darters in butter. Yum.
