Peden says he would be more effective than Paul
Victoria Advocate ^ | 01/22/2008

Chris Peden, 43, said he’s a pretty normal guy.

But this mayor pro tem and certified public accountant spurred abnormal change in Friendswood.

Peden led efforts there to refund $1 million in property taxes to homeowners, a first in the city’s history.

Peden is the sole opponent for Ron Paul, R-Texas, heading into March’s Congressional District 14 Republican Primary, and he was in Victoria on Tuesday to explain why he thinks voters should choose him.

District 14 encompasses counties from Victoria to Galveston, and eight others along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Peden said Paul does little for the district. Instead, Peden said, Paul uses his congressional position as a microphone.

“He’s summarily dismissed by the Republican vote. He is completely ignored by Congress, and he does nothing to promote the needs of this district,” Peden said.

Paul is in two races, including his bid for the U.S. presidency.

Peden said he is battling Paul’s relative national popularity, as well as the millions of dollars the incumbent raised online.

But this accounting firm founder said financial walls aren’t the only walls surrounding his campaign.

This self-professed “true conservative” suggested there needs to be a wall on Texas’southern border.

“Sealing the border is a security issue, not an immigration issue, with me,” Peden said. “We need to seal the border for safety.”

He said he doesn’t care for President George W. Bush’s solution to a perceived national recession.

Peden’s firm handles 1,000 tax returns a year – including returns for businesses – and he said many are financially stable or better.

“Our economy, if left alone, will always have hills and valleys,”Peden said, blaming over hyped worries largely on the media.

Peden said he welcomes a debate with Paul. The Advocate has contacted Paul’s office in efforts to arrange this.

Peden, a 20-year husband, has four children.

“For 20 years, you’ve got nothing from your congressman and it’s got to change,” he said. “I’ve proven I’m a conservative that gets results.”

I agree. Ron Paul owes his constituents a refund.

So Chris will "go along to get along" and sell out his principles to "get things done"?

(sarc)Yeah... that'll improve things... (/sarc)

Chris said he'd "get things done". Which things need doing? Passing the GOP backed green house gas bills? Maybe passing more stuff like McCain-Feingold or McCain-Kennedy?

So you've got a favorite RINO who'll do battle with your own personal Grendel in the form of Ron Paul. Yippy. Good for you.

I hope you get what you deserve.

Peden will milk the taxpayers for all their worth. He’s a big spending and something of a annoying trekie type (I’ve met more than few) who wants to force the taxpayers to pay for his fantasies of sending rockets to explore the planets. Then again, when one considers the big spending policies of the Republican Congress, a big government guy like Peden will probably be presidential material in a few years.

He has voted against a ton of bills that are not conservative. Sorry, I don't want conservatives playing ball and compromising with dems on out of control spending and assaults on our Constitution. He's a solid paleo.

If paleos are no longer wanted in the party, fine. We'll find out how much completely dumping paleos and libertarians does to your big tent.

The Paul haters are more than willing to support a big spending RINO apparently.

Well, once in a while he actually refers to the dusty, outdated thing we call the Constitution. Unlike pretty much anyone else in office.

No, because he votes like a founding father.

How about funding our troops who are getting shot at? Paul doesn’t seem to even want to give them bullets and body armor. How about funding the border fence and putting the military and guard on the border, Paul doesn’t want to do either.

...but I understand, border security and our troops mean nothing to you Paulites.. Yippy, good for you.

Everyone in Congress (and who is running for President) claims to follow the Constitution- just like Paul. Paul is to the Constitution as Fred Phelps is to the Bible, he picks and chooses and twists it to his own end.

I don't get that. In order to move the party back to the Right, we need people willing to take a stand on Conservative issues. Instead of trying to find folks who hold similar conservative positions to Paul's, but don't come across like a Crazy Uncle, they just start propping up more RINO's.

It must be easier to find people who will pander to "get things done" than to actually have to stand for something regardless of opposition. Call 'em the Neville Chamberlain branch of the GOP.

Big Spending, funny, I would like to put Paul's $400 Million 2006 Earmark tab up against most Republican Congressmen and see how that stacks up.

Paul introduced his own border security bill and was one of the first to call for the NG on the border.

At least get SOME of his positions correct, h'mkay?
