WASHINGTON (AFP) - US grocery chain Trader Joe's said Monday it would stop selling food imported from China due to customers' concerns about the products' safety.
"Our customers have voiced concerns about products from this region and we have listened," Trader Joe's spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said in a statement.
"All single ingredient food items sourced from mainland China are scheduled to be out of our stores by April 1," she said.
"We will continue to source products from other regions until our customers feel as confident as we do about the quality and safety of Chinese products."

You are getting schwanzed.
The wine is Charles Shaw. The chardoney was voted the best of California! $2.99 in Oregon
I’m glad to hear that
God bless Trader Joe’s!!!
Glad I played a small part in banning Chinese food imports.
While a pinch of sugar can improve flavor a bit, any more than that ruins good spicy jerky, IMHO. I use a good amount of salt, but that it insufficient to ward off botulism during the hours of low heat (155 degrees). It took me some time to find sodium nitrite that was not sourced from China and I ended up having to buy a large quantity.
Still searching to find a place where I can get some pants, shirts and shoes NOT made in one of these non US companies. It is not easy.
As you say, it's made in California by a Vietnamese refugee (who's got to be a zillionaire by now). The stuff is everywhere in Northern VA, I've recently seen it in plain old Chinese restaurants. And the Spicy Chile With Garlic is also great, a genuine tongue burner (I just did this on Sunday night with Spicy Chile Garlic on a bowl of Vietnamese fried rice).
We always have both versions in the kitchen, and I hate it when we've run dry. It goes on pizza, noodles, VN food (of course), pho, mixed into hamburger patties, etc. It's great stuff.
I no longer keep catsup in the house! Sriracha is the food of Gods! its good on burgers its good on eggs, its awesome in soup. I cant eat Pho without it. Just the best sauce ever.
Sambal Olek is good too if you really want some heat.
All from the good ol USA
I love this country!
last time I was at a Joes in Framingham, MA a few years ago i noticed that all the ice cream was covered in frost and frozen to each other. all the non-brand name food on the shelves looked old and dusty. bottles were covered in dust like they have been sitting a loooong time.
i have a thing about eating old, non-brand name food so i just walked out.
I have a buddy who completely loves the place and eating their weird stuff.
the dude bairly has a penny to his name but that dont stop him from loading up on the stuff each week.
to each is own i guess.
i used to do computer work and Wholefoods was a client for a few years.
sitting there for a few hours was like a trip to the zoo or a freak show or something. i do not miss that!!
one thing about WF is their meat section is awesome, if you got the cash that is.

Try Cabelas (www.cabelas.com). They might have some stuff and they usually promote American made goods.
For those uninitiated “Pho” pronounced “Phur” is a beef noodle soup that is the national dish of Vietnam.
Pho is to them like out hamburger, an iconic lunch food.
I would like to open a place that sells both, an “east meets west” concept.
We could call it Pho Burger.
There is not a grocery store anywhere that can tell you if the ingredients in their processed foods came from China or anywhere else. If you want to know, you have to contact the manufacturer. Even then you will have to give them a lot number to be able to tell if the specific product ingredient came from China or somewhere else. Some may be able to tell you they use no ingredients from China because they have made an effort to do so, just like Trader Joes.
Even something like Alaskan Salmon can be proceesed in China and then sent back here. (hint, package “printed in China”)
Trader Joes is way out in front of everyone else on this. They are not trying to hood wink anyone. Ask congress why they failed to pass legislation on ingredient labeling when it came up for a vote.
Ithaca Ginger Beer and Ithaca Root Beer are great. Whenever we’re in Ithaca, we stop at the Wegman’s and pick some up.
This has kind of turned into a food thread. Lots of recommendations for sources of oriental condiments.

Indeed it is. Right up there with nuoc mam (fish sauce).
Did you know the ancient Romans used their own fish sauce variant for everyday cooking?
No surprise, I added a tablespoon to a pot of spaghetti sauce, and it improved the taste *dramatically*. I think nuoc mam is the secret ingredient to superb Italian cooking.
Ha ha.
It needs “Date Rape Candies”
Yes. I keep the Nuc Mon here as well and it isn’t at all odd for Italian. Much Mediterranean Italian used anchovie as an ingredient.
Yes I did know about the ancient Romans use of it
