Indeed it is. Right up there with nuoc mam (fish sauce).

Did you know the ancient Romans used their own fish sauce variant for everyday cooking?

No surprise, I added a tablespoon to a pot of spaghetti sauce, and it improved the taste *dramatically*. I think nuoc mam is the secret ingredient to superb Italian cooking.

Yes. I keep the Nuc Mon here as well and it isn’t at all odd for Italian. Much Mediterranean Italian used anchovie as an ingredient.
