WASHINGTON (AFP) - US grocery chain Trader Joe's said Monday it would stop selling food imported from China due to customers' concerns about the products' safety.
"Our customers have voiced concerns about products from this region and we have listened," Trader Joe's spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said in a statement.
"All single ingredient food items sourced from mainland China are scheduled to be out of our stores by April 1," she said.
"We will continue to source products from other regions until our customers feel as confident as we do about the quality and safety of Chinese products."

Where is this grocery chain, Trader Joe’s, located mostly? I’ve never seen one.

You will like it! I can even get it in rural Tx.

Yup, Wegmans (Ithaca) is really the only place I shop for food. Such an outstanding supermarket. The mandarins I've seen there have either been from Spain, California, or Morocco, actually from the same suppliers when I lived in the Midwest. They keep forever too.
I've been much more careful about frozen foods after all of the problems in China. Most of the frozen vegetables are pretty clearly marked now, and I try to stick to the Western Hemisphere. (Mexico, Brazil, US...)

Of all of the great beers of the world I’ve been lucky enough to try, the fact remains that I cycle through Miller High Life more than any other.

"Isnt Trader Joes frequented exclusively by metrosexual hippie elitists?"
Hey! I resemble that remark! DFU, too! He and I were comparing TJ experiences (and favorite items) a couple years ago.
They've had some frozen organic vegetables from China, very good stuff. The ban is too bad, but understandable. And from what I've been reading about the BA 38 crash, which ended the magnificent Boeing 777's unblemished safety record, it seems that Chinese jet fuel should be the next thing banned.

I went to buy some Christmas candy canes at CVS and I was shocked to see they were made in China. Needless to say, I passed them up.

I had a heck of a time trying to find some cure for jerky that was not from China.Did you try sugar and salt?

“If you want to try some bold natural teriyaki sauce, check out Veri Veri Teriyaki from Soy Vay (US made).”
You’re right, it’s bold, flavorful and it’s my favorite teriyaki sauce on the market.

I agree with the poster who said he or she does not buy any food that is not made in the US or Canada. I almost bought candy canes at Christmas in K Mart but did not when I found they were made in Mexico. Next day I saw candy canes in CVS and was shocked to find out they were made in China. Needless to say, I passed on these too. It is really depressing that now we even can not get candy canes made in our country.

They also have decent prices on wine ie: 2 Buck Chuck and their hard liquors (single malts) as well.
Example Glennfiddich for around $24 Balvenie at about $33 and Glenmorangie at about $35. This is in California and from what I have seen in some other states like NJ or WA that is a bargain. I like their food selection as well and I am not a metro-whatever hippie elitist

I don’t shop in the hippie stores like joe’s or Whole Foods so I hope this trend continues with the conventional, normal grocery stores jumping aboard also.

They tend to be in college towns and upper-middle-class suburban areas. You won't find them in the sticks, unfortunately, or in super-hoity-toity neighborhoods. Great places for cheese, wine, frozen foods, breads, dairy products. Best egg prices in town. We do most of our food shopping there and Whole Foods. Their house-brand Hefeweizen is the best I've had, including in Germany. Wish they'd stock Lagunitas IPA, though.

I don’t know what these others are smoking but the trader joes around here is a complete fruit-loop paradise.
the elite metro’s would rather be seen at whole Foods.
The dirty, poor hippies prefer joes.

You don't know what you're missing.
I've rhapsodized about TJs elsewhere on this thread. It's a great place. Their frozen pizzas from Italy are out of this world, and inexpensive. As for Whole Foods, that's where we get most of our meat and veggies. Buy the stuff on special, it's no more costly than a supermarket's, but way more flavorful and higher quality. Example: I needed three pounds of ground lamb and they only had one, so they pulled out a big, beautiful boneless lamb breast and ground it on the spot. I'd noticed before that their ground lamb is much, much leaner than any other I'd purchased elsewhere, but no less flavorful. Now I know why.
