WASHINGTON (AFP) - US grocery chain Trader Joe's said Monday it would stop selling food imported from China due to customers' concerns about the products' safety.

"Our customers have voiced concerns about products from this region and we have listened," Trader Joe's spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said in a statement.

"All single ingredient food items sourced from mainland China are scheduled to be out of our stores by April 1," she said.

"We will continue to source products from other regions until our customers feel as confident as we do about the quality and safety of Chinese products."

Let’s hope a “trend is developing.” I am sure our pets would ask us not to buy Chinese produced pet food products if they had voices to do so.

Trader Joe’s is by far our favorite store. This has been in the works for some time, and we have been involved with management in lobbying corporate on this issue. We congratulate TJ’s for listening to their loyal customers.

Isn’t Trader Joe’s frequented exclusively by metrosexual hippie elitists?

Not me, and we spend 70% of our food dollars at TJ's. And their prices are exceptional.

Maybe you should have googled it, then. How about wheat ...

Must be a regional thing. The grocery stores around here don't sell raw wheat.

Funny, I was just complaining to the TJ store manager about this 4 months ago.

A phony move. The company I work for buys many of it's raw ingredients from China. They are sweeteners like aspertame, nutricuticals like chondrointin etc.... We do no analysis of them whatsoever. We merely keep the certificate from the shipment on file. We find metal flakes and all kinds of crap in the stuff during processing. The cost however causes the management to pull out the perpetual excuse generator.

Most all finished food goods have raw materials from China. Oils, sweeteners, flavorings, colorings, vitamin/mineral additives, processed grains, etc...

>>>Good for them, I will miss the Tsing-Tao though.....<<<

One of the five essential food groups.

Try Sapporo "Reserve" (23.5oz cans) as a substitute. Much better & (bonus) much larger! Hard to find - generally have to order it through liquor store or market.

Very smooth....worth looking for.

“Unfortunately, almost everything else will contain some product from China. Most food additives, preservatives, etc. are manufactured in China. I had a heck of a time trying to find some cure for jerky that was not from China.”

So, shouldn’t we all be dead now, since the liberal media hysteria says China products are akin to poison?

All of you continue to believe the liberal mainstream media hysteria and lies and live your lives in fear. Meanwhile I shop at Walmart and am fearless and don’t worry. I haven’t had a health problem ever. And so what if I do . Everyone dies so does the media want us to believe the only way we will die is if we buy from China or Walmart or buy an SUV (global warming hoax).

God Bless that American company called Wal-mart for saving me so much money!.

Listen, China has a population of 1.3 Billion. They abort babies and fine couples who have more than 1.5 children.
Still population keeps growing. The food is obviously not
killing them.

I was amazed to learn that 85% of the vitamin C in the world comes from China!

I've gotten Mandarin oranges from Spain, in-of all places-Giant. It is good they have them, because I buy NOTHING labelled "made in China" or that has a "distributed by..." label (it's not as hard as the MSM makes it sound, either).

I'm located in Fairfax, VA, BTW.

"in other news, trader joe’s increased its prices by 72% due to rising costs."

That is acceptable to me. I am willing to pay more to support non-PacRim and especially US producers. If it means I buy less product overall, that is a sacrifice I am willing to make for the survival of our economy.

How would we know? It is not like there is a free and open press or consumer advocate groups that would tell us. There is really no telling how many die.

They are showing more balls and backbone than anyone else among the large stores.

Live it to the Germans (The Albrecht Bros. are the owners of TJ's) to show some fortitude how to handle customers wishes!

I shop exclusively at the Monrovia CA main store. They even special ordered things my wife wanted and delivered to our place...and yes, I have seen some of the healthy hippies strolling around looking like zombies but, who cares as long you get your choice of foods.

They do have some excellent prices on eggs, real butter, spices, breads (bagels, muffins etc), frozen meals, wines, spirits and did I mentioned beers?(genuine German Biers?)

Go try it out, you won't be disappointed.

Yes. They can’t expect to sell in advanced markets without meeting advanced standards. That’s how trade works. China will have to grow up.
