(Feb 2000) McCain Rips Into Evangelists - Senator blasts Robertson, Falwell
San Fran Chron ^ | 2/29/2000 | Carolyn Lochhead

On the eve of primaries in Virginia and Washington, Republican presidential candidate John McCain ripped into Christian televangelists Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell yesterday as ``agents of intolerance'' who ``shame our faith, our party and our country.''

The blistering broadside -- issued in Virginia Beach, near the Christian Coalition's headquarters -- was a first for any Republican presidential candidate and a daring assault on conventional wisdom that has long held that Christian conservatives are vital to the GOP base.

As McCain courted the Republican moderates, independents and Democrats he hopes will support him in today's GOP primaries, his rival, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, campaigned in Washington state, denouncing the Arizona senator's speech at a Seattle news conference.

``You can't lead America to a better tomorrow by calling people names and pointing fingers,'' Bush said. ``Ronald Reagan didn't point fingers -- he never played to people's religious fears like Sen. McCain has shamelessly done, ascribing views to me that I don't hold.''

McCain Drops F Bomb on Colleague

At a closed door meeting over immigration legislation, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) got into a shouting match with Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), telling him at one point, “Fuck you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room,”

And Falwell and Robertson probably believed McCain was the antichrist. Not a stretch for me.

Nahh.

McNutt just blew his fuse - AGAIN.

Even if McNutt manages to get nominated, there are going to be even MORE conservatives and evangelicals in the southern states who stay home or vote third party instead of for him.

If this goes to the convention, I hope on the Second ballot they see sanity and defect to Huckabee.

There is NO WAY John McCain can beat Obama. McCain is a land mine waiting for anything to set him off.

???????????

You REALLY think McManiac can beat Obama?

He’ll probably say something anti-black in the general election.

McCain is a land mine.

the senator is a master of blunders, yet few notice.

Abraham Lincoln when asked why he appointed his fiercest enemy Secretary of War in his cabinet, answerer by saying the best way to get rid of an enemy is to make him a friend (or words to that effect).

As close to death as McCain probably is (elderly, former POW, 30 times higher chance of heart attack or stroke) this was a very big risk on his part to criticize the recently deceased Jerry Falwell.

We can see John and Jerry there in line (somewhere) and ol' Jer looks back and sees John in the same line. "Hey, John" he hollers back, "glad to see ya!"
