On the eve of primaries in Virginia and Washington, Republican presidential candidate John McCain ripped into Christian televangelists Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell yesterday as ``agents of intolerance'' who ``shame our faith, our party and our country.''
The blistering broadside -- issued in Virginia Beach, near the Christian Coalition's headquarters -- was a first for any Republican presidential candidate and a daring assault on conventional wisdom that has long held that Christian conservatives are vital to the GOP base.
As McCain courted the Republican moderates, independents and Democrats he hopes will support him in today's GOP primaries, his rival, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, campaigned in Washington state, denouncing the Arizona senator's speech at a Seattle news conference.
``You can't lead America to a better tomorrow by calling people names and pointing fingers,'' Bush said. ``Ronald Reagan didn't point fingers -- he never played to people's religious fears like Sen. McCain has shamelessly done, ascribing views to me that I don't hold.''

I’ve got no love for Robertson or Falwell but Damn John.
Tic, tic, tic...
If he rips Jesus a new asshole, he will have gone too far.
John McCain - loose cannon and unstable personality - explodes once again.
Hoping Huckleberry beats him - PLEASE - I believe in miracles too - they can happen!!!!
McNutt is just pandering to his base.
Thanks for this reminder from 2000. Have been opposed to McCain anyway for his backstabbing conservatives in general, this seals it.
From a social conservatives standpoint such as myself, better Huck than McCain. McCain will stab us social conservatives in the back for sure.
Huck should be bringing up McCain’s numerous meltdowns and running ads on them.
“Let’s pray McCain has an equally embarrassing meltdown. You can do it, McQueeg....”
have faith.
The article is from February 29th of 2000 when he was running against Gov Bush. But your right about what Huck said, who knows what will happen between now and the convention.
Wow!
His stupid arrogance does not cease to amaze me.
I heard that Fox News said McCain would have to “move left” for the general election after he clinches the nomination.
I guess his yes men are telling him it’s already done.
I’m no fan of those guys either, but I know they are generally on our side in the wars against socialism and leftism.
Hey McLame! Jerry Falwell is deceased. Leave Jerry alone!
I note this is from 2000..........hope there's an instant replay for 2008.
It’s from 2000. A blast from the past.
This is what he said in 2000...but there’s always hope he will have yet another gaff.
This is a BIT OLD? KNOCK off the BS...this reminds me of the LIBS reliving FLORIDA in November of 2000.
“I heard that Fox News said McCain would have to “move left” for the general election after he clinches the nomination.”
I’ve been saying for those deciding to vote for McCain or not, watch him in the Senate and campaign trail the next 9 months.
By the time it’s all said and done I imagine it will be an easy choice what to do.
