WASHINGTON — U.S. fighter planes intercepted two Russian bombers flying unusually close to an American aircraft carrier in the western Pacific during the weekend, The Associated Press has learned.

A U.S. military official says that one Russian Tupolev 95 buzzed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 50 nautical miles out. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret.

Russia is BACK! Don't trust the Russians. People REALLY need to pay a LOT more attention to this than they are.

See the price of oil drop, and the Russian will be back to patching things with duct tape and flying only every fifth weekend.

It’s just a coincidence that every time oil prices drop, Russia or Iran or Venezuela do something stupid. </sarc

Next time this happens there needs to be a Tupolev 95 splash 2000 feet past the carrier.

Yesterday, AP-Google ran a story on this in which they basically blamed the USA for the tensions with Russia. The article said the tensions started when we declared our intention to place a missile defense system with 10 missile interceptors in Poland and the Czech Republic. (The installation is there to guard against Iran, which gets all sorts of weaponry from RUSSIA).

The AP-Google article made no mention of Putin’s grab at dictatorship and the Russian military build-up and arms sales to Red China and Iran.

Every time a transport truck breaks down in Nigeria, Wall St. speculators jack up the price 50 cents/bbl. What a racket!
There is a glut of oil. Chavez should have to drink his surplus if the U S economy slows down this summer.

Well, it looks like the Russians have decided to join with the Chinese, Muslims and the Latin American Marxists against us.

I wasn’t sure they would until lately.

Russia has been getting a little antsy of late. Seems like more of these type stories have popped up on FR over the past few months.

Interesting. Wonder if they're flexing their muscles for the Chinese? (Americans likely won't shoot at them when they're posturing like this....I dunno about China....)

A Tu-95 flying overhead at 2000 feet is a big hazard. That’s only half a mile up. Everyone on the flight deck must have gone deaf even if they had hearing protection.

You see Russia is now testing us just like China.

In the cold war days heads would be rolling.... What the hell has happened to our Navy?

This story reminds me of those people who were taunting the tigers back at Christmastime.

Doesn’t an intercept usually mean that the intruder was stopped or turned back? This story is about the fly-over of a carrier.

Video of a TU-95. We could have launched WWII Hellcats to shoot it down. The one overhead was no danger. The one orbiting 50 miles away however could have caused problems the hypersonic cruise missiles if we had engaged the closer ones. These planes are large POS. They are only useful as platforms as modern standoff attack platforms on suicide missions.

Perhaps the USN is just awaiting passively yet another USS Scorpion (SSN-589)-event?
