~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: New London Submarine Base Naval Submarine Base New London is the Navy's first Submarine Base and the "Home of the Submarine Force." The main base occupies more than 687 acres. It is also home to more than 530 acres of family housing, 17 attack submarines, and the Navy's nuclear research deep submersible NR-1. WASHINGTON (Feb. 8, 2008) Chief Warrant Officer Jeffrey R, Barone is presented wtih the Bronze Star Medal by Vice Adm. Paul E. Sullivan, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, for his actions in Anbar Province, Iraq. Barone was awarded the medal for his work in countering radio-controlled improvised explosive devices. He also participated in 89 combat patrols and was involved in combat action while seizing enemy munitions and ordnance. The Bronze Star Medal, awarded for bravery, acts of merit or meritorious service, is the fourth highest combat award of the U. S. armed forces. U.S. Navy photo by Monica McCoy (Released)
NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 10, 2008) Lt. Robert O'Connell, assigned to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), kisses his daughter after returning to the Naval Air Terminal at Naval Station Norfolk. O'Connell and more than 75 Sailors returned from a 12-month deployment as staff of CJTF-HOA. The Sailors deployed to Djibouti to fill vital staff billets and to serve a crucial role in a region of strategic importance.
