Ex-Boeing Engineer Arrested in Orange(CA) on Spy Charges

A former Boeing engineer was arrested at his Orange home today after being accused of compromising national security by stealing trade secrets about several aerospace programs, including the Space Shuttle, to benefit the People's Republic of China.

In an indictment unsealed today, Dongfan "Greg" Chung, 72, was charged with eight counts of economic espionage, one count of conspiracy to commit economic espionage, one count of acting as an unregistered foreign agent without prior notification to the attorney general, one count of obstruction of justice, and three counts of making false statements to FBI investigators, prosecutors say.

A woman who answered the phone at Chung's home in Orange identified herself as Chung's wife then declined comment.

Chung – a naturalized U.S. citizen – worked for Rockwell International from 1973 until its defense and space unit was acquired by Boeing in 1996, authorities say. He retired from the company in 2002, but the next year he returned to Boeing as a contractor, a position he held until September 2006.

Chung worked in Downey for Rockwell until it was acquired by Boeing, the indictment said. After that, he worked at Boeing's location in Huntington Beach, it said.

Prosecutors said Chung started getting "tasking" letters from those in the Chinese aviation industry as early as 1979. The missives directed Chung to collect technological information, prosecutors said, including data on the Space Shuttle and other military and civilian aircraft. Prosecutors allege that Chung responded in one letter indicating a desire to contribute to the "motherland."

He accessed the secrets through a security clearance he held while working on the Space Shuttle program, prosecutors allege. The indictment alleges that he took and concealed Boeing trade secrets relating to the Space Shuttle, the C-17 military transport aircraft and the Delta IV rocket.

"Prosecutors say Chung obtained the materials for the benefit of China."

I’m sure he was merely following the Clintons’ lead - a few months early, that’s all.

This is very interesting in light of the arrests announced today of a DoD employee and a couple of other Chinese on spying charges in VA and New Orleans. It would appear that perhaps our FedGov is getting serious about Chinese espionage and is sending them a “message.”

I hope this is the case.

I don’t know why but as soon as I saw the thread HL in the Sidebar I thought, “Bet he’s Chinese.”

Now if some bleeding heart leftist is lurking and think that's 'racist', oh well... that's the way it is Sparky, deal with it.

Only after the next attack. I’m 10x more worried about the threat from COMMUNIST China than anything from the Camel Cavalry. Can you imagine if a politician in the 60s or 70s had such close ties to the Soviets as some of the PRESIDENTIAL candidates have to China today?

Dongfan "Greg" Chung, was charged with eight counts of economic espionage

Is he just another one of the millions Bush is welcoming into America by the tens of hundreds of thousands, while telling all of us we must conserve energy and use less gas?

Sure am getting tired of foreign languages spoken here, people that worship cows and strange Gods, that wear head turbans... Most of these foreigners and illegals have as much patriotism to America as a ham sandwich.

We've got people in the country illegally, working on our military bases during war, so I guess this is no big surprise.

Considering the 'Space Shuttle' is ANCIENT technology, how long has our government known about this?

The article would lead one to believe they just discovered this mole.

Seeing as this clown was receiving "tasking letters" from China since 1979...do ya suppose the geniuses had enough time to figure out he was a Chinese spy? ROFLMAO

Chinese espionage is prolific and it’s extensive. Anyone in the business will tell you that without being specific. But the general terms are enough to cause a complete review of all security clearances.

They will probably say, as in the past, the perps were apprehended before doing any damage, but don’t believe it.

They are shutting some doors, thank goodness, but many horses got out of the barn already.

Where you suppose the technology used by the Chinese came from for their satellite program, submarine fleet, modern equipped armed forces, etc. - the largest army in the world. This is a problem with fat, unresponsive bureaucracies run by civil servants that don’t have vision beyond the tip of their noses.

This is not surprising. Spying is a known fact of life.
Every country does it.
The secret is NOT GET CAUGHT!
So happy these did get caught though.

What about these two, proudly working for Bush.

U.S. carrier help? (Admiral offers help to China)

Adm. Tim Keating, the U.S. Pacific Command leader, told reporters during his visit to China last month that while building and operating a carrier battle group is complex, the United States is willing to help.

"We would, if they choose to develop [an aircraft-carrier program], help them to the degree that they seek and the degree that we're capable, in developing their programs," Adm. Keating said.

U.S. may share missile info with China
WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- The United States would "seriously" consider sharing technology and missile warning intelligence with China, (Secretary of Defense Gates) the U.S. defense chief said Sunday.

Some China firms avoid U.S. technology transfer licenses

WASHINGTON: Six months ago, the U.S. government quietly eased some restrictions on the export of sensitive technologies to China. The new approach was intended to help U.S. companies increase sales of high-technology equipment to China despite tight curbs on sharing technology that might have military applications.

But now the administration is facing questions from weapons experts about whether some equipment - newly authorized for export to Chinese companies deemed trustworthy by Washington - could instead end up helping China modernize its military. Equally worrisome, the weapons experts say, is the possibility that China could share the technology with Iran or Syria.

The technologies include advanced aircraft engine parts, navigation systems, telecommunications equipment and sophisticated composite materials.

Fox News is reporting that AT&T is trying to figure out why all (most?) of the Blackberry services in the country have suddenly gone out across the U.S.

Would anyone care to bet that it’s the result of or retaliation for these spy-ring arrests and is orchestrated by Chinese government-sponsored hackers?
