BUFFALO, N.Y. — Florida Panthers goalie Thomas Vokoun saw fear in Richard Zednik's ashen face when his teammate reached the bench with blood gushing from his throat.
"He was very scared," Vokoun said, describing the frightening scene after the right side of Zednik's throat was accidentally sliced by teammate Olli Jokinen's skate during a game at Buffalo on Sunday night. "He was conscious, I guess. His eyes were closed, but he was moving and moaning."

Meat cutters have metal mesh gloves that they wear to prevent slicing their fingers open. Maybe they could make one out of kevlar.
I’d love to know how they stitch up a wound like that. To get to it, you have to take your hand off the cut....
Ouch...this happened 20 or so years ago to a Buffalo Sabres goalie. Glad he’s ok.

Last season, Carolina goalie Cam Ward left a game after getting crashed into. No immediate reason was given. John Forslund and Trip Tracie (their TV announcers) later let people know that Cam had taken a skate to the leg and it cut through his equipment and into his thigh muscle.
Skate blades are razor sharp.
Yep...that's the material I am thinking of. It's fairly light-weight but keeps a sharp edge from slicing into flesh. It might even make sense to lay a thin strip up a players inner lower arm to keep ligaments from getting sliced in that unprotected area between the glove and elbow pad.
You’ll never be able to prevent all those kinds of injuries, but if you can deflect the blade or slow it down, it’s going to be a win.
They do make a neck guard but players don’t wear them because they are very uncomfortable.
Can you imagine the hell that Olli Jokinen was going through? Yikes!
And then, after the company gets the patents on it, they can lobby Congress to make a law requiring use of the "Under Amour".

Yup. They didn’t have all that information about his previous injuries when I read the article the first time.

I know that stuff like that doesn’t happen much at all, so it’s probably worth the risk to not wear one.
Myself included...I tried to use one but I felt like I was wearing a cast on my neck. That's why I am thinking that a small strip of metal mesh that runs parallel to the players neck up both sides (maybe an inch wide) might not be too intrusive and players wouldn't mind wearing it. Running parallel to the neck it would thereby run perpendicular to the worst kind of blade cut. Heck, if it was sewn into the undershirt it wouldn't even be like an extra piece of equipment (and wouldn't put cold metal in direct contact with the skin).
I used to ice skate with my daughters alot. You want to keep the blades really sharp as you get an excellent grip on the ice for turning, stopping, etc... The injuries caused by sharp blades are the only detraction.

how old is that picture? Now it’s mandatory that NHL goalies wear a throat guard that hangs underneath their helmet, a rule which has been in place for 2 or 3 years now.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Richard Zednik remains in stable condition this afternoon at Buffalo General Hospital.
Sonya Noor, M.D., the attending surgeon for Zednik, said the injured player would remain in the intensive care unit and will be evaluated throughout the day.
Zednik, 32, was injured during the Buffalo Sabres-Florida Panthers game at the HSBC Arena. His wife Jessica flew to Buffalo late Sunday night along with Karen Cohen, the wife of Florida Panthers General Partner and Chairman of the Board/Chief Executive Officer Alan Cohen.
Panthers Assistant General Manger Randy Sexton, who remained in Buffalo with Zednik last night stated, “The entire Panthers organization wish to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the medical staff at Buffalo General Hospital, the Buffalo Sabres organization, the HSBC Arena staff and to the Panthers and Sabres fans who have expressed their thoughts and concerns.”
More information regarding the surgical procedure will be made available later this afternoon. At this point, there is no formal press conference scheduled. However, as details become available, we will alert you.
