We're not likely to do any better with McCain in office.
McCain Argues for U.S. Troop Withdrawl from Somalia Mr. Blackhawk Down (YouTube VIDEO)
You will recognize his arguments as the same ones liberals are now using for leaving Iraq. Add his defense of terrorists rights, restricting interrogation techniques and his support of the KLA and I have a real problem believing he will be anything but weak on foreign policy.

A DEM brought to power because the GOP failed to produce an acceptable candidate will have ZERO power..

You want to be pragmatic? What is the pragmatic reality of giving amnesty to (I'll be conservative) 10 million illegal aliens? The last three general elections have been amazingly close to 50/50. What will 10 million new Dem voters do to that? Under current law, with no changes offered under McCain/Kennedy, those 10 million new citizens can bring in and naturalize all of their extended family members. Would 3 each be a reasonable estimate? That's another 30 million Dem voters in the next 10 - 15 years.
Never mind how many entitlements those 40 million new citizens will want...and vote for themselves.
Now, pragmatically speaking, who would Republicans in Congress be more likely to fight against? A Dem Pres. or a Republican Pres who has been the architect of Amnesty?
