WASHINGTON, DC, March 19, 2003 (ENS) - The U.S. Senate rejected a provision to allow oil drilling within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) Wednesday, despite an intense lobbying effort by the Bush administration and the Republican leadership to approve the measure.
Conservationists, who have expended considerable effort lobbying against drilling in ANWR, applauded the vote. They consider ANWR the crown jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System and contend that oil drilling would cause lasting damage to the refuge's wildlife and fragile ecology.
The vote is "a victory for wildlife and all Americans," said Brooks Yeager, WWF's vice president of Global Threats.

The Senate voted 52-48 in favor of the amendment, with eight Republicans joining 43 Democrats and one Independent.
These eight Republicans were Senators Chafee, Minnesota's Norm Coleman, Maine's Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, Oregon's Gordon Smith, Ohio's Mike DeWine, Arizona's John McCain, and Peter Fitzgerald of Illinois.

By stabbing the President and the Majority Leader in the back in the judges fight, McCain shows that he has no intention of running for President
WASHINGTON—Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) announced that he has no intention of running for President of the United States this week by his latest egregious blow to Republicans when he joined Democrats in a phony “compromise,” that will allow liberal interest groups to continue to block reasonable judges. The extreme leftist group People for the American Way called the McCain sellout, “good news,” convinced the measure would help preserve liberal activist judges’ influence in the courts.
Senate Democrats have spent the last two terms blocking Bush administration nominees through the unprecedented use of the filibuster to create a supermajority requirement for the confirmation of federal judges. Republican lawmakers, led by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn..), were poised to return to the principle that judges with majority support should not be denied an up or down vote, but they were betrayed in the 11th hour by Sen. McCain.
“When McCain brokered the deal to betray his Republican colleagues by negotiating a private surrender to the Democrats, he publicly declared he has no interest in the Presidency. No Republican could expect to win the G.O.P. nod after betraying his party’s rank and file on one of their most central concerns,” said Grover G. Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform and a leader of the center-right coalition in Washington, D.C..
McCain has no further designs on the Presidency, said Norquist, since his actions have now so alienated the base that the fence could never be mended. Norquist went on to say that since his failure in the primary campaign of 2000, Sen. McCain has “screwed” Christian conservatives, gun owners, free press advocates, taxpayers, and now opponents of the activist judiciary. Experts say such behavior precludes any Presidential aspirations by a Republican.
“John McCain has been transfixed by the lights of the cameras,” said Norquist. “In the course of running toward the cameras, McCain has now managed to stomp on the toes of every part of the center-right coalition. He has now made it official: He will not be running for President in ‘08.”

Three senior US generals will appear before senators today to explain what they knew about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by soldiers under their command.
We dont have to do anything. I cant vote for McCain, and neither can anyone I know. McCain is the knife in the heart of the GOP and I refuse to back anyone just because he has a R after his name or because the party told me to do so.
I am American first, Conservative Second and Republican third.......
My one issue is the Global Warming scam. It’s adherents threaten our liberty and our economic future every bit as much as Islamofascists. The difference is, they’re winning the PR war, and many otherwise reasonable people have bought into their baloney.
NO ONE who buys into the Global Warming scam will ever get my vote. Especially not one who has been in the forefront of dangerous stuff like “cap-and-trade.”

We have Canada drilling right across the border from ANWR and we have China drilling in Cuban waters near FL.
So we already have people drilling in areas that our Congress won’t agree to.
What price is it going to take for the US public to demand some sense of our Congresscriters?
Pelosi, Reid, Clinton, Obama..and I guess McCaine will probably suggest we nationalize the oil companies to lower prices..
I will respectfully say that in my opinion, we don't know which of your three are "better," nor could we probably agree what "better" even means. No one in the military other than some career officers seemed to have much good to say about the Clinton years; complaints about the repeat and extended deployments are common complaints about the Bush years. Certainly Hillary Clinton is no friend of the military, and that is not debatable. Her husband also loathed the military (probably) as much, yet he didn't hesitate to use it on Serbs or empty tents. John McCain is willing to let POWs/MIAs slip into oblivion, and plays games with the current CinC to the detriment of the mission. Like Hillary Clinton and B. Hussein Obama, he thinks terrorists need to have more rights. Obama PROBABLY leans more toward Hillary's open disdain rather than John's lip service, but that's just my guess.
In a nutshell, they will ALL use the U.S. military to further their own goals, whatever those goals may be. ALL three are demonstrable liars who probably have no business being CinC.
As a soldier's dad, my vote was no doubt simply assumed to be in the bag for McCain when the smoke-filled room types set out to anoint McCain. They were wrong, and all of us will pay for their many miscalculations.

Yeah we ought to drill Anwar but the only way we ever become middle east independent is nuclear. France has now replaced 70% of fossil fuels with nuclear - and they are not vulnerable the way we are.

I’m in favor of drilling it, but do we have any stats on how much drilling ANWR would affect gasoline prices in the USA?
Their gas prices are far higher than ours.
