Ok. I have a problem with this. “Tapping into” a wireless network does not give one the ability to put pornography on someone elses computer on that network. You either have been accessing pornography or you have not been; it is your computer, the wireless is simply access to the internet.

I was thinking the same thing. The cops will be asking the brother-in-law some very pointed questions about those photographs.

Not entirely true, HD1200. They could have opened a folder for sharing on their unsecure wireless home network with full permissions. Any idiot could then drop files on their system (in that folder - including creating new folders in the shared folder).

Time to enable WEP security.

But I’d think twice about deleting everything before calling the police. If the camping trip photos ID the neighbor, that may be evidence that links him to the kiddie porn.

a wireless network does not give one the ability to put pornography on someone elses computer on that network.

If you have shared folders, another computer could place files and folders in your shared folders depending on how you have them shared.

Not necessarily true; anyone unsophisticated enough to run an open wireless network is also likely to have machines wide open to r/w access from that network.

If you have a shared folder, and an unsecured WiFi connection, anyone on the network can access your shared folder, and you, theirs.

Yeah, you can’t put stuff on someone else’s computer. But, I believe it would show the brother-in-law’s IP address visiting the site if the photos were downloaded from the net.

At first my BIL and SIL thought the photos were on their computer, but they weren’t. They were on the neighbor’s computer but they were “shared”.

You're simply wrong about this. When I was a student at a university, my computer in my apartment was on the network and I was able to access anyone's computer on that network who didn't secure their settings. Curiosity getting the better of me, I copied one of my files and pasted it on their drive just to see what would happen. I then deleted it. I could have deleted their entire drive if I had wanted. Made no sense to me then either but I know what I saw.

Simply not true. If you have file and drive sharing turned on, you’re open for bizness.

Printer and File Share unchecked in Windoze system folder? Probably not.

Sounds like the original poster's BIL is a digital neophyte. Must have been too eager to start using his wirelees portal to set up a WEP.

Digiot.

If any parts of the disk drives on the network are set to share, those stealing your Internet can use them just like you can.

If the network is open and the administrator priveledges allow a non administrator to alter files on a home hard drive...yes it is possible.

They need to get a lawyer quick and call the cops. Computer
forensics experts can track all who are using the hard drive by tracking IP’s to and from the compromised computer so the owners of the network shoulkd have some legal protection! Kiddie porn sting operations may already be tracking this system...so they need to protect themselves quickly!

I agree. Something is very wrong if it is on THEIR computer. I know of no way to put stuff on a wireless network on someone else’s computer unless they have been granted specific permission and the hub is correctly set-up to allow file sharing among peers.

The folders reportedly are not on their computer, but are set up as shared folders. Why anyone would do that with porn is beyond me. But the folders are on the neighbors’ computer, just accessible from any network access point.

It could be placed into shared folders. The neighbor’s computer was part of the network and could do this.

Wow, are you WRONG!

If the wireless network is not secured, and neither are the computers on the network, then you can be in for a world of hurt.

A commercial graphics company that I once did some consulting for had complaints about their Internet access speed. It turned out that their server had been attacked and was a WAREZ server, holding nearly 25GB of pirated software. And this was at a company that supposedly had their Internet access set up by professionals.

Microsoft designed their networking to be easy to use, with security a distant second priority. It's not unusual to be able to get into an unsecured wireless network and then see all sorts of publicly available shares.
