How about talking with legal counsel before doing anything?

I sure as hell would. Certainly before calling the police.

Follow this ADVICE!

Often, police don't care who they take down as long as they can make a conviction = and they may decide you're the easiest target = after all, it's on your computer.

And the police can lie like hell to you, pretend to be on your side, ANYthing, until they have actually charged a person - they can and do lie.

If you have legal counsel going in, they're going to handle it much different.

But, as someone else said, do it before they discover it = or things could get messy real fast - for you.

Get legal counsel - and a computer expert ? that could tract down how it's being done - that would go a long way to keep the police from first looking at you.

GET COUNSEL NOW

Best advice on this thread, IMHO. I'm as pro- law enforcement as anybody, but the cops are NOT your friends, nor are they there to advise you legally. Your relatives have been compromised by criminals and they need expert advice to determine how to avoid being charged for something they had nothing to do with. An ambitious prosecutor could turn this very emotional crime into a cause celebre' to vault himself into a higher office. Don't think those crooked b@$t@rds won't do it.

Tell them to get a GOOD lawyer immediately, someone with some experience in this sort of situation.

For goodness sake, why? There is nothing that could ever come of calling the police and telling them that you’ve discovered child porn on your computer.

Even though it is going to cost you some money, I think this is the best way to go.

You deleted the files but I'm sure it can be recovered by an computer expert.

However, I'm worried about misunderstandings and being framed. Get the lawyer. Don't muck about being cheap...

I wholeheartedly concur. Freepers aren't qualified to give legal advice, and this looks like it has potential to get people in trouble who weren't out looking for trouble.

It appears that anything your inlaws do could backfire. Lawyer up.

How do they know that the local prosecutor isn't a Nifong?

Best answer on the thread

NEVER talk to the police about something like this directly. Always have a lawyer interact with them for you. And once the lawyer has started talking to the cops on this, always refer attempts by law enforcement to speak directly to you, back to your lawyer
