![]() Battle royal brewing at Berkeley council meetingSaturday, February 9, 2008 |
If you want to get a seat at Tuesday night's Berkeley City Council meeting, you better start lining up now. And you might want to bring earplugs. And a flak jacket.
Hundreds of protesters from across the country and the political spectrum are expected to descend on City Hall with bullhorns, drums, banners and plenty of vitriol in anticipation of the City Council's debate over the Marines' recruiting station in town.
The ruckus started last week when the council voted to send a letter to the Marines, calling them "unwanted intruders" for opening the recruiting center on Shattuck Avenue last year. At the same time, the council granted Code Pink a parking space and a sound permit to make it easier for the peace group to conduct protests outside the center.
On Monday, Councilwomen Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli introduced an item for this week's meeting, asking the city to retract its statements about the Marines and clarify that the city is against the war, not against the armed forces.

Semper Fi!!!
I want all my Federal tax dollars NOT to go to Berkeley. I’ll be white-headed by the time that happens.
"We're starting to get people coming in from all over the U.S.," said Catherine Moy, executive director of Move America Forward, one of several pro-military groups planning an all-day protest Tuesday at Maudelle Shirek City Hall. "People are pretty upset. We want to avoid clashes, but it could be really, really big."
The only Battle Royal that could ever happen in Berkley should we have pink or burgundy curtains in or battle room.
Every member of the Berkeley PD that has served or has relatives serving in the military should call in sick that day. All of should, but the military ones would be more likely to.
"We want to protect our city from the onslaught of the right wing," said Code Pink spokeswoman Zanne Joi.

I wish these journalists would get it right. I haven’t had to engage my brain since I was 19 and I’m turning 23 this year. What’s wrong with them?
Even if they cave they still need to be punished. Stop the funding on these projects.
I don't know if that could happen. The police allowed the code pink and other anti-military anti-American haters break laws and did not arrest them.
They said they had to remain neutral.
They apparently were told to allow rampant fascism to go on undisturbed.
They need to be investigated.
It's going to be a long, long night!
the city is holding a meeting Monday afternoon with representatives from all the protest groups to establish the ground rules.
I wonder if the Police will continue to remain "neutral" which in reality sided with Code Pink and brought shame to the total police department?
The petition
We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Councils treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws its action.
The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.
The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.
The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the militarys dont ask, dont tell policy.
In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

Yes they do.
Stop all Federal funding and bring the Council and the Police up on charges for directing/allowing laws to be broken by their lackeys.
Unfortunately, the will not accept your name unless you donate.
Are other Freepers going to be there? Anything those of us far away can do to help?
C9. What you said.
