Violations of 'Islamic teachings' take deadly toll on Iraqi women

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The images in the Basra police file are nauseating: Page after page of women killed in brutal fashion -- some strangled to death, their faces disfigured; others beheaded. All bear signs of torture.

The women are killed, police say, because they failed to wear a headscarf or because they ignored other "rules" that secretive fundamentalist groups want to enforce.

"Fear, fear is always there," says 30-year-old Safana, an artist and university professor. "We don't know who to be afraid of. Maybe it's a friend or a student you teach. There is no break, no security. I don't know who to be afraid of."

Her fear is justified. Iraq's second-largest city, Basra, is a stronghold of conservative Shia groups. As many as 133 women were killed in Basra last year -- 79 for violation of "Islamic teachings" and 47 for so-called honor killings, according to IRIN, the news branch of the U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

One glance through the police file is enough to understand the consequences. Basra's police chief, Gen. Abdul Jalil Khalaf, flips through the file, pointing to one unsolved case after another.

"I think so far, we have been unable to tackle this problem properly," he says. "There are many motives for these crimes and parties involved in killing women, by strangling, beheading, chopping off their hands, legs, heads."

"When I came to Basra a year ago," he says, "two women were killed in front of their kids. Their blood was flowing in front of their kids, they were crying. Another woman was killed in front of her 6-year-old son, another in front of her 11-year-old child, and yet another who was pregnant."

The killers enforcing their own version of Islamic justice are rarely caught, while women live in fear.

Animals treat each other better!!! Or should I say “intelligent” animals treat each better! I just can’t imagine serving (or believing) in a god that would sanction such actions. If this were the true god of our existence, I would rather spend eternity in hell.

The Religion of Peace strikes again!

Honor killings and inbreeding, what a sorry excuse for a culture.

Islam … shows that even Satan has a sense of humor (sadistic as it might be).

“There are many motives for these crimes and parties involved in killing women, by strangling, beheading, chopping off their hands, legs, heads.”

And to think that many Western women have converted to Islam.

It defies all reasoning...just like there is no understanding as far as I’m concerned, as to why our gov. tip toes on “egg shells” as far as the Muslims that are in this country. They protest about every little thing, DEMAND that their beliefs be catered to...guess what....this is America...last I knew ,this is a majority Christian nation...but even if it has several faiths, we all operated in a peaceful manner...that is...till the Muslim's come in and demand everyone cater to them OR ELSE..this is the time to step on their toes, to tell them you don’t come in to a neighbors home and demand they bow down to your “customs”.

Guess they’ve never heard that old saying...”when in Rome, do as the Romans do”.
How long do you think any of us would even be breathing if we went to any of those radical Mid East countries and demanded they allow us to even practice our religion. Do you think they would allow us to have Christian schools in their countries, preach that their country was SATAN... you know the answer.

Our people need to grow a backbone and insist our gov. stand up for what is right for our country..(for a change)if we don’t do it now, we can look at poor pathetic England...they have allowed the very soul of their country to be invaded, taken over and their culture destroyed by the hoards of Muslims who have for all intents and purposes destroyed their nation.

Good ol' CNN has to use the word 'conservative' where the word 'oppressive' would be better suited.

They will decide to protest when they are forced to wear a burka. Only then it will be too late.
