Except that the term "to pimp" has evolved over the years, whereas "ho" has not (other than it being shortened from "whore.")

"Pimp" is now used almost exclusively as a generic to mean "to put someone/something out in front of oneself to do their dirty work" (because so many people do so these days.)

You don't see "pimps" anymore. People don't talk about "pimps" anymore. People DO still talk about "hos." People Do still see "hos."

Hillary had a fundraiser featuring Timbaland, who talks and sings about TONS OF MOMS' DAUGHTERS being HOS. Hillary LOVES Timbaland. Hillary claps to his lyrics.

Hillary is not "OUTRAGED" about Timbaland calling OTHER MOMS' DAUGHTERS "HOS." In fact she has him to her "parties" and takes and banks the monies made.

I don't watch MSNBC so I don't know about this clown Shuster. I DO though, watch Hillary, and know that she is seizing upon this for her OWN political gain. And boy is she stretching the old "pimp" to match the new "pimp" ALL FOR HER OWN "OUTRAGE" AND GAIN.

NO WONDER Rush was talking abut Chrissy Fit bashing Klintoon for weeks and all of a sudden put on the brakes!

He got the memo. AND the message!

".....they’ll pass legislation with nice punishments for speaking out against the social engineering and collectivist programs they have planned for us...."

I'm just Bumping your comment for historical purposes, because I believe it. I for one will not be surprised when this occurs.

But since we are 8 years passed the beginning of TV shows (like Pimp my Ride) that use “pimp” to mean “to make great improvement”

That's a weak translation. It means something like "to make flashy" with connotations of gaudy or overdone. A reference to pimps' clothes, cars and homes. Schuster's comment was in the context of describing her actions on behalf of the campaign, not her wardrobe, and it takes a mighty stretch to read it as a "pimp my ride" reference.

They didn’t suspend Scarborough for his remark about Fred Thompson’s wife.

Weegee:”It is also common industry slang for those on the Tonight show/Late Show/etc. to know and proclaim that they are “pimping” their latest movie/book/album.”

ReignOfError: “”Doesn’t it seem like Chelsea’s sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?”

In that context, I don’t think there’s much way to argue which sense of “pimped out” was intended. There is no way you’ll convince me, or many folks, that it was meant to imply that her wardrobe is gaudy.”

Good points from both of you. Putting those together, you get pretty much my position. That Hillary really should have known the word has taken on a dramatically different tone than 10 years ago - the word is used so much in a positive sense that freaking out over its very use makes the observer look out of touch or dishonest.

But ReignOfError has correctly identified the tone. Under cover of the word’s evolution he just called the candidate’s daughter a prostitute and said the candidate was taking advantage of her daughter...

Now I don’t agree with that assessment - Chelsea is old enough, educated enough and has enough employment and media experience to make her own decision about how she is involved in the campaign.

Thanks to both of you.

I am seeing it used in a more general positive sense (like in the aformentioned Pimp My Garage article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution where it means to clean out and straighten.

But I think you are correct that Schuster was insulting the daughter and the mother although I think he was using the changing definition as a cover.

OH, I get you now, Reign! Boy am I thick!

Yes, your definition of "pimp" ALSO applies in the way that YES, they have been shameless as of late...due to Hillary's lack of youth, looks, flash, etc., (which Obama and wife DO have,)...in putting Chelsea out front and center to put a pretty, young face out there to bring votes in (and to put pressure on The View co-hosts and super delegates.)

Here I used the word "pimp" to mean THE dirty work, and you used "pimp" to mean to put the FLASH OF CHELSEA out front to do the dirty work. (Actually it's one in the same, LOL.) :-)

There's a whole lotta pimpin' goin on. :-)

"Pimp" is now used almost exclusively as a generic to mean "to put someone/something out in front of oneself to do their dirty work" (because so many people do so these days.)

Not true. "Pimp" is used to refer to the flashy, gaudy, overdone style traditionally associated with pimps. Another poster in this thread raised the MTV show "pimp my ride," in which the lucky candidate gets an expensive, gaudy, tacky overhaul of his beat-up old car (what the kids today call a "hooptie").

You don't see "pimps" anymore. People don't talk about "pimps" anymore.

May I ask a favor? could you go to the window, look up, and let me know what color the sky is on your world?

The pimp image is part and parcel of the whole gangsta culture. The garish threads, the bling-bling, the bouncing car with the metal-flake paint job and velour upholstery, and so on.

Using "pimp" for someone flashy and tacky is not a new phenomenon -- Gen. Patton was angered by the suggestion that he carried pearl-handled revolvers. His revolvers had IVORY handles, because "no one but a cheap New Orleans pimp has pearl handles."

All that said, in this case, the reference was to a person being "pimped out," which carries the clear connotation that said person is a prostitute.

I'm not going to get into the question of what Hillary! has to do with Timbaland, because it's not germane to the topic at hand, and I don't want to spend the time and effort to research it. This was MSNBC taking action on a comment that MSNBC found inappropriate.

And surprise, surprise... This move by Senator Clinton coincides with articles like this one
Chelsea Clinton taking an expanded role in Hillary's campaign

You don't suppose she would like to have it both ways - her daughter a grown up and active politically but still with the bubble of protection afforded to her as a child?

You can't seriously think the idiot was meaning that Chelsea looks good now? The conversation was about Chelsea making phone calls to people to get them to support her mother.

This is, of course, common for candidates, so I assume the problem the guy had with this is that Chelsea does not speak to the press or seem to make public speeches, just these cozy little phone calls.

And it's only NOW, when Hillary's faultering, that they go from not letting Chelsea utter a single word, to pushing her out front and center perfectly groomed and polished.

What a turnaround in their "privacy principles."

We all know what Shuster meant be the comment: He was implying that Hillary was sending Chelsea to do her dirty work. I don’t think the comment is in any way offensive. It’s just a colorful analogy. He didn’t call Chelsea a whore or anything like that.

Good job playing the victim card by the Hillary camp.

Chelsea Clinton seems like a nice young woman. So do each of the two daughters of George W Bush

Sure. So do Cheney's daughters, and Romney's sons, and Cate Edwards. I haven't seen much about McCain's or Obama's kids, except that none of McCain's was adopted from SE Asia (Indonesia?).

By choosing to participate in her mother's campaign, Chelsea placed herself in the public eye, as did the Bush twins four years ago. That makes them, to a degree, "fair game." But the "pimped out" comment was over the line. Would anyone take it benignly if GWB was described as "pimping out" Laura when she made campaign appearances?
