Mexican soldiers seize arsenal in drug raid on border
Houston Chronicle/AP ^ | Feb. 8, 2008 | JESSICA BERNSTEIN-WAX

MEXICO CITY — Mexican soldiers seized nearly 10 tons of marijuana, a machine gun, scores of assault rifles and three grenades in a raid Thursday just across the border from Texas, the military said.

Soldiers stopped a fleeing minivan and searched a nearby building outside the city of Miguel Aleman, across from Roma, Texas. Inside, they found the marijuana, 89 assault rifles, more than 80,000 rounds of ammunition and a host of other weapons, a Mexican Defense Department statement said.

Five men, from ages 28 to 62, were arrested, according to the statement.

The seizure follows weeks of bloody confrontation between federal agents and gunmen suspected of working for powerful drug cartels along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Since taking office in December 2006, President Felipe Calderon has used the military to battle drug trafficking, sending more than 24,000 soldiers and federal agents into drug strongholds across the country.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour, who is meeting with top officials in Mexico this week, warned that using the army to combat domestic crime for long periods of time is inappropriate and can be dangerous.

Calderon insists the increased military presence is only a stop-gap measure until local police are better-trained and corrupt officers fired. He says federal agents and soldiers have helped to make enormous drug busts and arrest some 15,000 organized crime suspects.

Many security experts criticize the crackdown, saying it has in fact increased drug-related violence in some states.

BWAHAHA!!! I think it was “Shoot, a feller could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.” and if you read Slim Pickens’ lips, you can see that he says “Dallas” rather than “Vegas.” It was changed because Dallas had only recently been the site of Kennedy’s assassination when the film was released. That enough trivia for one day?

Right, atta boy! Lets cut down on the violence by letting the criminals run amuck. That’ll fix it.

That lack of thinking reminds me of the “logic” of beating democrats with a “hold your nose” vote.

Yea, right, that will work, uh-huh.

“....Felipe Calderon has used the military to battle drug trafficking,...”

....it would be interesting to run the serial numbers on the confiscated guns....see if the Mex army sold them to the drug runners....or if they came from overseas...anybody remember Sandinistas armed with M-16s that had been captured by the Viet Cong?

don’t worry, President McCain will ‘secure the border’ so these kind of caches won’t be an issue in the future.

the free flow of trade and commerce in drugs and illegals must not be impeded, at any cost.

Sorry...the tagline is from The Manchurian Candidate, coincidentally, another movie that got jacked around by the events in Dallas.Couldn't resist, as I've been getting a real brainwashing from the media re: McCain.

Well it sure fits Juan.

BTW, would this country let a sitting President back into the White House if he had been captured by enemy forces and held incommunicado for five years? Would that not be a severe security risk?

Why, Juan, he could have been brainwashed and programmed to invoke nuclear war if he ever had the chance. No telling what went on for those five years he was a prisoner. The other guys that were in the same POW prison all said that he would disappear for days at a time…

Mexican soldiers seize arsenal in drug raid on border

A dog and pony show to help Bush justify the $1 Billion he wants to send to Mexico, supposedly to help fight the drug cartels.

Of course the money will go directly into the corrupt government cronies pockets, but hey, at least it's only a $Billion for Bush's buddies in Mexico.

Actually, that's some pretty interesting trivia. Now I wonder how I can bring that up at parties and in day-to-day conversation.....
