Mona Charen: Why They Can't Vote for McCain
Townhall ^ | 2/08/08 | Mona Charen

Posted on 02/08/2008 2:46:25 AM PST by 668 - Neighbor of the Beast

Bradley Smith, former commissioner of the Federal Election Commission and the leading legal scholar on campaign finance issues, experienced the McCain treatment firsthand. Because Smith opposed limits on political speech, he was denounced as "corrupt" by the senator... The two did accidentally meet outside a hearing room in 2004 when they were both scheduled to testify before the Senate rules committee. At first, McCain grasped Smith's outstretched hand (Smith was in a wheelchair, recovering from surgery), but when he recognized his campaign finance opponent, he snatched his hand back, snarling, "I'm not going to shake your hand. You're a bully. You have no regard for the Constitution. You're corrupt."

You have now become completely disconected from your principles.

The problem with your statement is if you stand on your principles to long the other side will eat your lunch. Some times you have to pull back and look at the greater good which you may not be 100% happy about but in the real world it is the best you are going to get.

"Either way, you’re not anyone but the Dems."

Try English next time!

Oops -- haven't had the morning coffee yet. Apparently you haven't either, or someone pissed in your corn flakes!

One thing I can tell you for sure -- if you don't vote, or vote for the Democrat, you will have no hope for a minimum of four years.

McCain is toast even if conservative hold their noses and pull the lever for him. Its not the conservative vote that gets candidates elected - its the enthusiastic support (read: money, poll working, etc.) which really count. McCain may convince many conservatives to go the lesser of two evils route, but without enthusiasm from the base he doesn't stand a chance.

It is sad to think that the best we can do is an authoritarian RINO who is a little unhinged vs. two Marxists. That it should come down to this is truly disturbing.

Re: post #26

I think Joe was talking about dead presidents, as in “money.”

I can still enjoy free speech, right up to the election. Nobody except my wife and dog have to listen, however.

An imperfect position, but better than any Democrat.

Surely, I have held other positions that have not met with widespread agreement from conservatives. I won't pretend otherwise nor would you permit me to forget it. On the issue of illegal immigration, a position which provoked the outspoken opposition of many conservatives, I stood my ground aware that my position would imperil my campaign. I respect your opposition for I know that the vast majority of critics to the bill based their opposition in a principled defense of the rule of law. And while I and other Republican supporters of the bill were genuine in our intention to restore control of our borders, we failed, for various and understandable reasons, to convince Americans that we were. I accept that, and have pledged that it would be among my highest priorities to secure our borders first, and only after we achieved widespread consensus that our borders are secure, would we address other aspects of the problem in a way that defends the ru le of law and does not encourage another wave of illegal immigration.

Good point. McCain doesn’t get enthusiasm from anybody. As one left-leaning observer put it, “People LIKED Reagan.”

Enough people approved of McCain, to get him where he is today, but he can’t win new supporters.

And when the Dems and the media get to work on him, he will quickly lose what support he has.

If one doesn't stand on one's principles even when the going gets tough, they aren't really principles, they are merely opinions.

Yes, I am dissapointed. It’s not that he isn’t 100% of what I want, it’s that he isn’t even 40% of what I want.

I think that no matter if it is McCain, or one of the Dims this country is in for a BAD time. I would rather the Dims get the “credit” and maybe a decent R will be nominated next time.

There is a strutting self-righteousness about McCain that goes hand in hand with a nitroglycerin temper. He flatters himself that his colleagues in the Senate dislike him because he stands up for principle whereas they sell their souls for pork. Not exactly. He is disliked because on many, many occasions, he has been disrespectful, belligerent and vulgar to those who differ with him.

We get a new term for him: McVulgar.

I respectfully disagree. I can't and won't vote for ANY of the liberals who are currently their party's de facto nominee. I WILL work hard to re-take the House and Senate and fill both bodies with principled conservatives who will oppose whatever grandiose socialist schemes that a president Hillary, Obama, or McCain will try to shove down our throats. That's our best hope to preserve the Republic of the United States of America until we can elect a real conservative to the WH.

McCain's claiming to be a conservative is nothing short of repulsive to me. Actions speak louder than words and McCain's actions during his senate career prove that he is anything BUT a conservative. Don't be swayed by the manipulative speeches emanating from his staff of skilled writers, take a long look at his actions.

What nonsense.

Anyway, I don't want to taunt you -- I'd rather you just fade away -- you know, like what happens to your representation when you don't vote...

This is the traitor John McCain chose to be his "Hispanic Outreach Director." Hernandez is a verified traitor. Born in Dallas he decided as an adult to become a dual-national Mexican citizen. His last job was serving as Mexican President Vicente Fox's "American Reconquista Director."

Hernandez believes all Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the USA should become dual citizens and consider themselves Mexicans first, "to the 8th generation."

The "New American Pioneers" proclaimed in his book are the illegal alien invaders he urges to become settlers in the USA.

And this is the man McCain chose for his "Hispanic Outreach Director." In the past week he was asked about this choice, and he said he chose Hernandez because he agrees with his positions.

Yet out of the other side of his mouth he says "He has heard us" and he will "Secure the border first."

Juan Shamnesty McCain is precisely a treacherous liar.
