Mona Charen: Why They Can't Vote for McCain
Townhall ^ | 2/08/08 | Mona Charen

Posted on 02/08/2008 2:46:25 AM PST by 668 - Neighbor of the Beast

Bradley Smith, former commissioner of the Federal Election Commission and the leading legal scholar on campaign finance issues, experienced the McCain treatment firsthand. Because Smith opposed limits on political speech, he was denounced as "corrupt" by the senator... The two did accidentally meet outside a hearing room in 2004 when they were both scheduled to testify before the Senate rules committee. At first, McCain grasped Smith's outstretched hand (Smith was in a wheelchair, recovering from surgery), but when he recognized his campaign finance opponent, he snatched his hand back, snarling, "I'm not going to shake your hand. You're a bully. You have no regard for the Constitution. You're corrupt."

Hell, the last eight years have taught us THAT.

If you think the last 8 years have been tough, just wait for the next 8....no matter who is elected.

7thson: “I’ve decided I’m not going to play in this game anymore so I’m just going to sit on the sidelines. Have fun.”

I respect your opinion.

Believe me, I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve been disappointed by politics and politicians. I really try not to care, but I do. It’s not in my nature to sit back and watch while others destroy a country many fine people gave their lives to build. As nations go, America is STILL a pretty exceptional place to be, and it’s emphasis on individual liberty is virtually unique throughout history. All in all, it’s worth fighting for.

I once thought we’d win the war (against liberalism) by electing the right leaders. Well, I since learned the other side never gives up, and neither should we. The battle for small government, personal responsibility, and individual liberty is one that must be fought vigorously, or the other side wins. After all, human history is on their side. Liberalism is easy. We’re the ones who are trying to achieve something exceptional.

Some good questions -- until you consider the only alternative is Obama or Hillary.

What hope can voters ever have that their vote will count and their voice will be heard?

One thing I can tell you for sure -- if you don't vote, or vote for the Democrat, you will have no hope for a minimum of four years.

ElPatriota: “(McCain has no) respect for the wishes of the people.”

Actually, I’m more concerned about his respect for the constitution. It’s this contract we have that says the people don’t always get what they wish simply because a slim majority want it.

To which Mr. Smith replied, “Thanks juan... coming from a Keating Five Senator like yourself... that is quite an endorsement”.

"One thing I can tell you for sure -- if you don't vote, or vote for the Democrat, you will have no hope for a minimum of four years."

Vote now for open-borders, free-speech restrictions, Democrats vetting Republican SCOTUS appointments, etc..... and lose ALL hope for decades. And that you can be sure of!

“John McCain - just flush twice.”

It takes a PowerShot toilet to flush that turd.

Congratulations! You have now become completely disconected from your principles. (or did you ever have any?)

It's a matter of whose principles you want to prevail -- theirs or ours, and I think you know who I mean!

Fine — don’t vote or vote for the Dem candidate. Either way, you’re not anyone but the Dems.

In 2004, when Sen. John Kerry was getting his comeuppance from the 'Swift Boat Veterans for Truth,' vets who had known him during the war and couldn't remain silent as the Democratic nominee distorted his war record, McCain weighed in by calling the Swift Boaters "dishonorable and dishonest."

I had forgotten this comment...

browardchad: “I was wondering how the true believers would defend CFR.”

I’m not a true believer in CFR. In fact, my immediate thought when I heard about it was, “that’s unconstitutional.”

However, I will hazard a guess at how a reasonable person could believe CFR is OK. If you look at the history of CFR, you’ll find out it’s been around a lot longer than McCain or Thompson. I don’t justify what they did, but given the body of existing CFR law, it’s plausible they thought #1 it was constitutional (older CFR law was) and #2 they were legitimately trying to fix the system.

My question to McCain would be, “Do you still support McCain-Feingold, and, if so, on what constitutional basis?”

Look up “Juan Hernandez” before you try selling one-line promises from an open borders champion. That is if the issue means anything to you in the 1st place.

Too bad there can only be one winner in the election. You must be so disappointed.
