Rep. Darlene Hooley (D-Ore.) announced Thursday that she will not be running for reelection, becoming the first Democrat from a competitive seat to announce her retirement this election cycle.

“I have decided to pursue different professional opportunities in 2009 and will not be filing for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008,” Hooley said in a statement.

This is a toss up district that narrowly voted for Bush. So here we have a chance.

A GOP House pickup possibility. I’d urge the Black Republican State Senator Jackie Winters to run, but she’s either at or over 70. :-(

She had a closer-than-expected race in 2006 against businessman Mike Erikson, who’s already running again.

Jackie Winters lost the 2004 primary by like 55%-45% because she voted for a couple of tax increases-—while those votes were inexcusable, I think that it was even more inexcusable for primary voters to give the nomination to a pro-abortion RINO instead.

Part of me would like to see Senator Jackie Winters become the first black Republican Congresswoman in history, but the most important thing is to win the district and keep a Democrat from becoming entrenched prior to 2012 redistricting (when Oregon will likely gain a seat). If Mike Erikson would have a greater chance of winning, then I would support him. But the fact that Winters is around 70 wouldn’t faze me, since she wouldn’t need to serve more than 2 or 3 terms to have made a big difference for the GOP in Oregon and nationwide; besides, the GOP will be running a 71-year-old for president, and while he’s not exactly my cup of tea, I think he’ll carry Oregon for us for the first time since Reagan in 1984 (President Bush came within less than 1% of carrying it in 2000 and got a respectable 47% in 2004, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades).

This is a 50% Bush district-—let’s get this done!

Here’s another key Congressional race.

Another reason that Jackie Winters lost was because she was a late-entering candidate, while her opponent had been running for some time and had secured commitments from many who privately were sympathetic to Winters.

You are so right. Oregon is slowly turning Republican, but it will take a long, long time.

You would mean turning back. Oregon used to be a preeminent Republican state for most of its history.
