WASHINGTON The continuing drama of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination should not diminish what John McCain has accomplished on the Republican side of this campaign.
The senator from Arizona still has to finish off the challenges from Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, but after Tuesday's victories in such key states as California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Missouri, and a commanding lead in delegates, the question is when, not if, he will secure the nomination.
What is more, he has emerged despite all the negatives of the George Bush legacy as a serious possibility to win the presidency in November.
On Super Tuesday, I placed calls to knowledgeable Republicans, Democrats and neutral observers to check their appraisals of McCain as a general-election candidate.
Arizona's Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, who sees her home-state senator at close range, said, "He is not to be underestimated." An Obama supporter, Napolitano said McCain is "a gifted campaigner with a great life story. When everything seemed to go wrong for him last year, I told people, 'Never write John McCain off.' "

Well I have reviewed the options for myself, if McCain is the candidate and have the following choices:
1. I can vote for McCain, Obama or Hillary, or sit this one out.
2. If I sit this one out then I’m hoping that Obama or Hillary don’t screw things up too badly, just badly enough so that a more conservative candidate can win in 2012.
3. If I vote for McCain I’m hoping he plays more to the conservative side of his party than he has in the past.
The choices are not easy. I’d rather have a reincarnation of RR, but that isn’t going to happen. I’d vote for another Bush term over any of these people. He has the right stuff even if his poll numbers are terrible and the media treats him with contempt.
I believe that McCain could beat either Democrat if he rallies all elements of the GOP. He has a better record than either Democrat for a general election.
So I say we all need to think logically and not emotionally. The presidency in times like these is too important. McCain it has to be or we have conservative chaos.
Neither do I. It’s the “at least he’s better than Hillary” croud that underestimates him.
So I say we all need to think logically and not emotionally.
LOL
He is probably right about fence tho. They will just dig more underground tunnels!
check out arizona republic news on line. They are leaving arizona in large amounts because of large fines. Texas doesnt have those same laws. So they are moving there ! I cant post article in here arizona republic is one of those newspapers who don’t allow their articles copied and pasted on blogs.
Nope. We have a better chance of stopping bills like amnesty with republicans in congress united against a real ‘rat than a turncoat RINO.
The point will be that Conservatives are not reliable voters and that therefore conservative issues lose, and supporters of conservative issues lose.
If you don’t want to vote for McCain, then write in/protest vote for POTUS. A split ticket speaks volumes. Staying home just says that Conservatism isn’t worth supporting because you cannot get elected because conservatives stay home unless the nominee is PERFECTLY conservative. So why run as a conservative for a lesser office if that guarantees a loss?
i sincerely doubt Lieberman would be his running mate. the man adds nothing to his ticket. he would need a Southern or Western Conservative Governor to brush up his credentials. If anything he may appoint Lieberman to DHS or something. If he did make Lieberman his VP that would be the stupidest thing anyone in his position could do.
No thanks...
i am no McCain fan and voted for Fred in NH but in the general i will vote for McCain if he is the nominee here is why:
McCain ACU lifetime rank 82 2006 65
Hill 9 and 12
Bama 8 and 8

Mccain believed that spending should be cut along with taxes !
And alito statement is heresay and is not admissable ! if it wasnt for the gang of 14 alito and roberts might not have been nominated !
My brother and his family and their circle of friends are pretty apathetic about politics but they have one thing in common: they all like John McCain and are all going to vote for him this fall (at least one voting for the first time in years). They don't like partisan politics and see John McCain as someone who will rise above it.
I don't share their sentiments but I think it is not uncommon among the independents. It is what will make John McCain a political force in the general election.
You can take that extreme position if you wish.
I believe he will make winning the war his first priority and may consider Fred Thompson as his running mate.
McCain cannot win without taking Florida. Does that give a clue about his selection of a running mate?
You don’t think Soros wants to destroy this country? Think again...he embraces our enemies, funneling millions to Islamic extremists. That’s a fact.
a lot of bills he has vetoed in the past he vetoed because they were ladled with pork !
