The poster said the kid wanted to fly helos, not fly in them. The Air Force has no Warrant Officer or enlisted flying programs for pilots like other services. Of course there are enlisted aircrew members, but that’s different.

When did the AF stop flying helicopters? It isn’t just the Navy, Army or Marines who use helos. What about Pave Hawk and Pave Low or the rescue choppers? If he wants to fly an attack helo then the Army or Marines are the place to go.

Don’t forget the Coast Guard. Same school as Navy & Marines...

A few of us AF types were also Marines. I went from Marine NCO (E5) to retire as an AF O4. Funny, I never thought of myself as being wimpy!?! Oh well, hoorah and Semper Fi RTO, NHF.

By the way, I spent two tours at Offutt and retired here. These protests have gone on for years. The nitwits are pretty much ignored by those on the base and by the local populace. Their “protests” barely make page three in the Omaha World Herald anymore.

If your son is serious about flying he should check out the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program in your area. There he will learn leadership, aerospace, and if he wants emergency services. part of the program is to get the cadets in to the air on orientation rides both power aircraft and gliders. It a good resume builder for college.

Check out the following link http://www.cap.gov

What state do you live?

True - there are no enlisted pilots in the Air Force. What you said though was “Can’t fly helicopters in the Air Force, Army and Navy only, possibly Marines.” Nothing about enlisted helicopter pilots. All the Air Force helicopters I rode in were piloted by Air Force pilots (and yes, they were commissioned officers), and crewed by Air Force air crew. Then you said “For the most part one has to be an officer to fly.”

The Air Force does fly helicopters, and flies them very well.

Wow, thanks, very interesting, I will ck out that link.

Yes, he is very serious, (scares me, but I don’t say that, lol). He has been since he was about l3 yrs old. I think it has to do with 9/11, growing up in wartime. He also took a class in middle school where they studied all US wars, tactics, maneuvers, war games, planning etc, he would come home and explain how and why Generals made their decisions, he was so excited. It was studying the Gulf War that began his interest in helicopters.

I know qualifying for that will be extremely difficult tho. But he will just not let it go, I can’t tell if its just a macho thing for him right now at this age, or if he will be willing to work that hard. We shall see.

We live in Michigan, close to Ann Arbor.

I corrected that. In the early 80s the idea was to give all all non navy fixed wing flying assets and missions to the Air Force and all Army/Air Force helicopter operations to the Army. I forget the years but there was a time when helicopter pilot was not an Air Force career choice. Glad to see it came back.

Why did you leave the Marines to join the Air Force? Does that occur often... and was yours a direct transfer or did you need to re-enlist?

There are several squadrons within 50 miles of you. You can check the website for a squadron locater. The Michigan Wing website is http;//www.miwg.cap.gov It will tell you more about what is happening in your state. He willl have to work hard and go to an encampment but, he should work for his Mitchell Award, this will help with scholarships, or may be worth a extra stripe if he enlists in the Air Force or Coast Guard.

I am a commander of a squadron here in Virginia, in fact we meet tonight. I am glad to answer an questions you may have about CAP.

The show still goes on here.

And I hate the road at the end of the runway. No matter how many times it happens, it scares the bejeezus out of me when I’m driving on it and plane roars over. Especially when ice is falling off of it.

Meanwhile, in beautiful downtown Berkeley:

The petition

We, the undersigned condemn the Berkeley City Council’s treasonous attack on US Marine Recruiters stationed in their city. We ask that Congress cut off funds from any and all municipal entity within the confines of the city of Berkeley, California, until such time as the city council withdraws it’s action.

The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and “if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests.”

The measure passed last week by a vote of 8-1.

The council also voted to explore enforcing a city anti-discrimination law, focusing on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

In a separate item, the council voted, also 8-1, to give the Marxist protest group Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week.

It’s been around for awhile. I volunteered as a Air Force flight engineer/door gunner on HH-53s back in 1984. Didn’t get it due to issues with depth perception. One of my co-workers was a flight engineer for Air Force special operations helicopters from 1972 to 1993 when he retired. Talking to him makes me wish I could have gotten the job.

The Air Force does fly helos, but they are mostly Rescue and Medevac ships.
