222.C. For a vacancy in the office of United States senator, the governor shall appoint a person to fill the vacancy. That appointee shall be of the same political party as the person vacating the office and shall serve until the person elected at the next general election is qualified and assumes office.

John McCain's current term as a U.S. Senator continues through 2010. Were he to be elected President, and only then resign, the Governor (a Democrat) would name a "temporary" replacement who would, in reality, serve out McCain's remaining term. This person would have to be a registered Republican, but this doesn't seem much protection from mischief. Were McCain to resign by (I'm guessing here) May, the Governor's appointee would only serve through the remainder of this year, and the permanent replacement being determined in the November election.

What do you think? Should McCain resign from the Senate if and when he locks up the Republican nomination?

Republicans in the Senate didn’t stand up and make (1) Lieberman resign in 2000 or (2) Kerry resign in 2004. Why should McCain be made to resign? Don’t get me wrong - he should resign and that way when he is trounced in the general in November he’ll be finished politically forever. He can get a full-time job as Chris Matthews’ guest commentator.

If they were really ‘committed’ and ‘serious’ about these campaigns and they really aren’t just expensive vanity plays, then they should prove it by resigning their office and going full time to winning the race.

I have zero respect for candidates like Lieberman who ran for both VP and Senator at the same. But I have actual contempt for CT voters who re-elected him while simultaneously voting for him to be VP under Algore.

For about 5 seconds. The resignation announcement he gave was the best thing he delivered in the campaign. The rest was abysmal.

No, she would appoint a democrat, but the seat would be up for election this November. Her democrat appointee would only serve until the 2008 November election (unless a democrat would win the seat).
