I woke up this morning to a ton of e-mail from aggrieved southerners, almost outnumbering the ton of spam for generic Viagra, which I've forwarded to the RNC. Anyway, southern voters resented my (and John O'Sullivan's) assertion that they hadn't voted for Mitt because he was a Mormon. Au contraire, they said they hadn't voted for Mitt because he's a north-eastern liberal. Whatever. I rather enjoyed this Georgia gal's take:
I was one of your "No Mormon, no way, no how" Southerners until someone at a dinner party asked me if I'd support Orrin Hatch for President. And you know what? I would. It's then I realized I just didn't like Romney because he's about as phony as baloney. And I am unnaturally annoyed at how he receives applause from his audiences: toothless smile, looking left tilting chin up, looking right tilting chin up; back and forth.
Oh and by dinner party I mean oyster roast.
Oh, dear. Mitt is beginning to feel like the conservative media's version of John Kerry, the guy the MSM thought they could drag across the finish line. Except we have a tougher problem, to which Lisa and Stanley referred. The default mode of the culture is liberal; the key levers of society are liberal. Bush-era strategists have largely ignored that reality in favor of get-out-the-vote and other organizational techniques. The defects of that approach seem increasingly apparent.
Bingo! Thanks for the great summary!
Never believe the Matrix: The “Media Matrix” that is..
I’ll never vote for Romney, if he should win.
I never said anything of the kind. Go back and quote me or stow it.
McCain does have a good record on many basic conservative issues, undeniably. His problems are on the high-profile issues where he deviates.
I am not a Mormon, and I don't have a religious litmus test to vote for a candidate.
That being said, I have to give the Mormons a lot of credit for their vote last night! I don't know what the breakdown of the numbers was in Utah, but I think Huckabee came in LAST place, even behind Dr. Paul.
Deut28 asks?
"Was there anti-Christian bigotry in the Utah primary?"
I look at it a different way. Those voters recognized their enemy and made the decision NOT to vote for him (Huckabee) and I commend them for that. It is obvious Huckabee hates Mormons, so WHY would or should they vote for him? If someone was attacking my Faith, there is no way I would vote for them for President.
My question is, it is OBVIOUS that McCain HATES conservatives, so why are so many voting for him? Because they think he can beat Hillery? That is NO reason to vote for someone.
So many purists here on FR condemn Romney for his liberal stands while he was a Governor of a LIBERAL State. I have no problem if people want to NOT believe him, not give him a chance to prove that he will keep his "NEW" promises. That is every voters right to evaluate the record versus what they now say. I made the difficult decision, as did many here, that after my first two choices dropped out, I felt there was a greater probability that Romney will keep his promises to the conservatives, then for me to vote for McCain, who I KNOW is a LIBERAL, a Democrat with an R next to his name, and who HATES conservatives! For me there was no choice. We know McCain hates us and will bring the Republican Party further to the left. With Romney there is the unknown...will he be true to his new conversion, or won't he? Well, we had a better chance of him keeping his promises, than we ever will with McCain doing ANYTHING for conservatives!
For all of you out there that rejected Romney over your principle of NOT forgiving him, or believing him, good for you for standing on your principals and voting with your conscious. But don't then criticize those of us that will NOT, under any circumstances, vote for McCAin. We have a right to stand by our principals as well.
By the way, all you prolife Republicans (I am one) who refused to give Romney a chance...
This is the group that endorsed Rudy, they didn't endorse Romney and notice they waited until after Super Tuesday to endorse McCain!
Sorry for the rant, but I'm sick of reading on the threads today, that I am now a traitor because I will not support McCain.
I pray that God will protect this Country, but I believe we are going to get what we deserve. I pray that as conservatives, we can find a way to UNITE and not compromise doing what is right, just to win!
Romney took 90% of the vote in Utah, something like 225,000 to the next highest who had about 15,000 I believe.
Excellent point. It will not be long before we're told to hold our noses and vote for the aberration that is mccain. Well I plan to stick to my belief that he is a trojan horse and nothing anyone says will make me pull the lever for him ever.
Where did those numbers come from?
BTTT!!!!
>Classic humor and a true portrayal of the south! Most Californians view people from the south with disdain because theyre so bigoted about so many things (race, religion, etc.)
Bombastic, pinheaded, pompous, self aggrandizing, foolish nonsense from the people’s Republic of Kalifornia.
And you wonder why so many people of all stripes view Californians with utter contempt?
Unfreaking believable stupidity!
AMEN!
If McCain gets the nomination, I will be looking for a Third Party candidate to get behind and support. We still should vote, and it shouldn't just be a write-in, it needs to be a valid candidate!
Exactly.
But they will vote for a conservative hater!
True enough, that many strongly like Romney’s personality, perceived character, etc.
Just as there are those who feel similar misgivings about - or revulsion towards - McCain or Huckabee.
I am not optimistic about the elections this year, to say the least.
Jan thank you I agree with you.
Gosh, maybe Huck's big problem in Utah was that, not only was he up against someone who shared the majority religion and was well known locally as the rescuer of the SLC Olympics, Huck was caught making a similar boilerplate anti-Mormon statement to a journalist in a casual, offhand manner. It ain't bigotry to take a personal slur personally.
