Mitt Romney's Pro-Entitlement Robo Calls(Hits McCain for Opposing $1.2 Trillion Boodoggle
Redstate ^ | 1/29/2008 | Ben Domenech

We all have heard about this by now, but The Politico's Jonathan Martin confirms it: Mitt Romney's campaign is trying to weed off John McCain's older Florida supporters by bashing him for voting against the biggest entitlement in the history of America.

Mitt Romney's campaign is sending out automated phone calls to Florida Republicans attacking John McCain on taxes and Social Security, an aide to the former governor confirms...

"John McCain voted against the AARP-backed Medicare prescription drug program," the call notes, in an obvious effort to give seniors pause about the senator.

There are any number of things you can attack John McCain for doing, but his vote against the Prescription Drug boondoggle was one of his proudest moments. Once again, the on-demand campaign is willing to make any promise, any argument from the right or the left, to achieve a win.

The Republican party used to be the party of smaller, cheaper government but in the last 20 years, the growth of government programs has exploded, including the very expensive expansion of Medicare which George W. Bush pushed through Congress with much Republican support. McCain opposed this, but it passed anyway. Romney naturally tried to use McCain's vote to pander to seniors. The price tag on this gigantic expansion of entitlements is estimated to be between $720 billion and $1.2 Trillion over 10 years. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A9328-2005Feb8.html

That money should have been used to cut taxes.

Similarly, McCain was one of only 4 Republicans to oppose the Bush Administration's pork laden $286.4 billion transportation bill (along with fellow "liberals" Jon Kyl, John Cornyn and Judd Greg. It passed 91-4 and Bush signed it.

In attacking the measure on the Senate floor, McCain said:

SEN. JOHN McCAIN: Here's my favorite so far: $2,320,000 to add landscaping enhancements along -- get this -- the Ronald Reagan Freeway. I wonder what Ronald Reagan would say.

McCain certainly doesn't sound like a liberal to me. In fact he sounds and votes on spending (which was always one of Reagan's big issues and the failure to really tamp it down his one regret) like a conservative, a lot more conservative than the current President and a lot more like the 40th President, whose policies Mitt Romney did not want to return to in his 1994 debate with Ted Kennedy.

If McCain is going to lie about Romney’s war position, he might as well hit McCain with the truth.

Speaking of money, is McCain raising any? Last week I heard on the radio that he had to take out a loan and guarantee it with a new life insurance policy. Doesn’t the heiress have enough?

“the truth”

I take it Mitt favors the big $1.2 trillion Medicare boondoggle. No surprise given his very expensive, and failing, health care mandate, RomneyCare. Complete with $50 copay abortions.

McCain certainly doesn't sound like a liberal to me.

Mccain/Kennedy

McCain/Feingold

Gang of 14

McCain/ Lieberman

John McCain has his name on more legislation with Democrats than do the two DEMOCRAT Senator running for POTUS.

He is not only a liberal, he LOVES liberals.

Rush Limbaugh said, "John McCain slides into bed with liberals every time they wink at him."

McCain certainly doesn't sound like a liberal to me.

Best of the 3 remaining, I'll vote for him in Illinois tomorrow. That said, I'll be glad when this is over and we can concentrate on bashing Hillary and/or Obama.

He's not bringing in as much as Ron Paul.

So, why'd McCain have to take out a loan?

Romney can’t con me. And I do not really think he conned Limbaugh, who is guided by his hatred for McCain rather than reasoned analysis of the whole record.

At this point I’m sure he’s bringing in more than Paul. That loan was a line of credit in early December to finance his N.H. campaign.

"Boodoggle"?

Is that a bit less egregious than a "Boondoggle?"

McCain is limited by the public money cap.

he took the money and is now capped until the end of the convention.

it is do or die for mccain on tuesday financially speaking.

It is the UNreported story the MSM refuses to cover.

$50 co-pay abortions are more humane than back alley jobs with a coat hanger, for those who can’t afford to pay hospital bills.
