The prospect of John McCain as the likely Republican presidential nominee has produced a squall of anger on the right. Normally reserved columnists and usually ebullient talk-radio hosts vie to express their disgust with McCain, and their disdain for the Republicans who are about to nominate him. The conservative movement as a whole appears disgruntled and dyspeptic.
Now I have nothing against a certain amount of disgruntlement and dyspepsia. The ways of the world, and the decisions of our fellow Americans, occasionally warrant such a reaction.
But American politics tends to be unkind to movements that dwell in anger and relish their unhappiness. In the era from Franklin D. Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy, liberals tended to be happy warriors — and that helped their cause. The original civil rights movement succeeded in part because it worked hard to transcend a justifiable bitterness. Liberalism faltered when it became endlessly aggrieved and visibly churlish.

Sorry I dont see Romney as a conservative at all. He made numerous socialist promises in MIchigan and he also did the same when he was running for gov of mass !
McCain isn’t popular with conservatives because he is more a Democrat than a conservative.
Other than the fact he has thumbed his nose at the GOP most of his career, he is also a very nasty and odious man.

I agree with you: I don't want a dem in office who is not the least conservative, and who will have a liberal litmus test for judges. That's why I could never vote for for a dem like John McCain - oh wait, he's Republican? Coulda fooled me!
Honestly, I dislike McCain, but to me, as a conservative, I see no options. I find it amusing that so many of my ‘real’ conservative fellow posters are now for Romney, who just a few weeks ago would have have labeled him as the most liberal of the lot. The blind hatred for McCain reminds me of the Bush Derangement symptoms that some many on the left have.
At the end of the day, I believe we’ll be okay. I will get a republican who I disagree on some core issues (immigration, taxes), but I will get a pro-military, anti-islamist, pro-life war hero as opposed to Hillary. Need I say more?
I clicked on her screen name and viewed her history - since she joined last fall, every post has been shilling for McCain. I've drawn my conclusion.

Wise statements all. I get upset at a number of McCain’s positions, and BTW I’m not sure he’ll beat Romney, we’ll see. But I have to make a sensible decision in the end as a citizen, and the posts saying they will vote for Hilary, or there is no difference, are just not being reasonable or accurate.

BS He'll support the agenda from his true side of the aisle, the democrat side. Foreign policy is meaningless when you allow the country to be invaded and colonized by third world peasants. Or when you want to import terrorists from GITMO to American soil so they can lawyer up, make bail and be loosed among us.

But after having read this, I’m sure to be continually happy because McCain is the nominee. After all, Kristol has declared from on high that if I’m angry, I won’t be well thought of.

Ironic thing is, McCain is perpetually angry and unhappy. Does that mean Kristol thinks he’s sure to fail? Kinda turns his thesis on its ear.
If you don’t think there will be a difference between Hillary/Obama picks for the court and McCain picks you are being silly. I think it’s just hyperbole on your part. You’ve got to see that even if McCain makes “moderate” choices for the court that is better than straight, out and out left-wing-activist choices.
